SKIRT, W Singapore Sentosa Cove

i wanted to visit W Singapore since it opened, and i was glad to find an excuse to go there on my birthday (months ago) hehe. it is so beautiful!!!!! and the service is amazing (: i'm definitely gonna come back here to have a staycation (dreaming...:D) if i have the chance.

such a gorgeous view right!!! wish i can dive into that pool right now hehe.

spent quite awhile camwhoring around the hotel because it was just so pretty. can totally imagine myself chilling right here hehe.

this is the famous Woobar, which looks damn comfy??!!! look at those plush sofas! and i think they serve high tea in really cute birdcage-like things ^^ i'm seriously 发花痴 now hee!

anyway, so now to the main point of why we were at W Singapore.....to have dinner at Skirt!! :) so excited! :D i'd been wanting to have some good steak, and i read about how W Singapore has steaks that are pretty reasonably priced (: they have a really wide range in fact. from $35 all the way to $100+. not "affordable", as some blogs described it to be. but they do have quite a number in the $40-$50 range, which i suppose is still alright (:

simply loved how classy this restaurant feels ^^

we started off on a high note with this complimentary serving of warm, fluffy bread ^^ it was really nice and soft and i would have kept taking more, if only i didn't have to save my stomach for the main courses haha :P oh btw they don't serve tap water here, so i think one bottle of san pellegrino is $10. haha kinda exorbitant if you ask me.

if you order the steaks, you will be served these two bottles before your main course ^^ the clear bottle is apple bourbon, which helps to cleanse your palate, while the other is bbq sauce to go with your meat (:

we also had three different kinds of salt to choose from. so cool!! although i can't remember what the different salts were :P there was a rosemary one, another that was spicy and i can't rmb the last one. honestly, i couldnt realllly taste the difference between them haha (except the spicy one), but they definitely added flavour to the meat when necessary! (:

to start with, we ordered an appetizer, king prawns split and peppered ($25). it was sooo good! huge, fat, juicy prawns with springy fresh meat that tasted so succulent! (: it was a little hard peeling the meat from the shells (hmm haha actually means that it's not so fresh, no? :P but it tasted alright!), but we enjoyed them thoroughly anyway ;)

haha sorry for the really dark photos!!! >.< makes the steaks look sorta strange huh :/ but the blackness of the steak is actually because they are all dry-aged steaks! :) felt really lucky to be able to speak to one of the waiters after our meal, and he described the aging process to us. it actually results in a very different flavour when the steak is grilled, compared to non dry-aged steaks, and for these steaks, even if you order it rare, it'll be red, but not bloody :) definitely good for squeamish people haha.

we ordered two steaks - this was the Skirt steak ($55) which is a blackmore australian full blood 9+ wagyu. it had a delicious flavour and barely required additional seasoning from the salt/bbq sauce. i still feel that such a high grade wagyu would actually taste better lightly seared (like when i ate it in hokkaido years ago...omg that was of an unmatchable standard!) rather than grilled this way.

we also ordered the donald russell irish grass fed Hereford 21 days dry aged tenderloin ($44). true to its name, this was more tender than the skirt steak, however, i felt that the flavour was lacking instead! but with the salt/sauces it tasted delicious (:

totally had a steak feast that day, rounding it off with the SKIRT Blackmore Wagyu burger ($30)! this was a delicious burger patty, that was succulent and very well executed! i actually liked this the most haha. the burger bun was really tough though!

i don't know why, but for me the stars of the meal were actually the sides :p hahaha. i totally gushed over the sauteed portobello mushrooms ($12), which were huge, seasoned to perfection and so super duper juicy and flavourful!!! you've got to try it to understand what i mean. they were so good!!!

we also super loved the asparagus, quail egg and burnt butter ($12). i believe it was thanks to the butter, that this dish was so beautifully aromatic. it was absolutely irresistible! ^^

overall, i'm not sure whether my amazing experiences in florence, italy clouded my experience, but i felt that the steaks i'd tried were not as fantastic as i'd heard. perhaps it was because we had gone for the lower-tier steaks in this restaurant, i felt there was definitely room for improvement. nevertheless, i loved the whole ambience there, the sides and all the little things that added to the whole experience (: and W Singapore, i will be back ;)

Suburbia

A winding road, a flight of steps, lush greenery. As you enter the oasis that is Suburbia, slightly hidden amidst the trees and shrubs that surround it, the buzz from the world outside falls away, as a soft but unmistakable sigh escapes from your lips. Set in a suburban and countryside environment, housed in a building of beautiful architecture that used to be the Ficus Station on Sentosa’s monorail system, Suburbia exudes a refined elegance and beauty. Surrounded by a manicured landscape and lush foliage, it is the perfect sanctuary to wind down after a busy day with a drink in hand.

With many European restaurants, foie gras is a must-have, and a must-try. As it is, Suburbia’s foie gras ($26) is one of their chef’s recommendations. Delightfully easy to slice through with little resistance, the foie gras has a rich, smooth body that slowly dissolves in your mouth. A pretty pear compote on the side is laced with cinnamon and provides a lightness that complements the foie gras nicely.

For a vegetarian option, try the Gratin of Cepes Mushroom Terrine ($28). Layers of sautéed cepes mushrooms are drenched in olive oil and crème au jus and gratinated till brown, and give off an earthy aroma which teases your senses. Topped with a red pesto that has a crunchy nutty texture, this is definitely an appetizing start to a meal.

You have a choice between the prawn bisque and soup of the day ($8 each). Be sure to check with the staff whether they’re serving the mushroom soup, which is one Suburbia’s best-sellers! With a generous amount of chunky mushrooms pureed into a creamy soup, fired up with a peppery kick, it is a favourite among mushroom lovers. The prawn bisque too, is agreeable, with the luscious essence of the prawn enveloped in the smooth soup. Despite its creaminess, the soup is somehow light, which allows you to enjoy the entire bowl without feeling too stuffed before your main course. And a little surprise at the bottom awaits – a crunchy juicy prawn to reward you for slurping up every bit of soup.

The grilled wagyu rib eye ($42) is a mind-blowing dish, with is gorgeous artistry and depth of flavour. The beautiful presentation of dishes at Suburbia characterizes the chef’s creativity and eye for design, and the expectations created with this first impression do not disappoint. The sexy musk of truffles wafts from the meat the moment this dish is placed in front of you. As you bite into the beef, fragrant juices ooze out with a burst of accents in your mouth. Absolutely delicious.

To cater to any sweet tooth, we recommend the warm chocolate fondant ($10). A charming spongy cake with a slightly chewy interior, piped with a delicious quantity of viscous chocolate mousse, this is a universally-enjoyed dessert. A unique accompaniment comes in the form of a honey & fig ice cream which you can’t say no to!

Palio

Palio welcomes with its warm interior, with lighting that is thoughtfully installed to mimic the sunlight of Tuscany. Chef David Bizzarri executes traditional Tuscan dishes with flair, using fresh seasonal produce from Italy to concoct a hearty meal rich in flavour. Flanked by both the sea and mountains, Tuscan cuisine enjoys the best of seafood and fresh produce, which you will experience at Palio.

The excellent service is apparent the moment you step into Palio. The waitress greeted us with enthusiasm and led us to our seat. Minutes later, the manager arrived with recommendations of drinks to go with our meal, and prepared a delightful bread basket for us as a starter. Their pizza bread is a must-try! A crispier, thinner rendition of pizzas you’re used to, this was perfect for an appetizer with its light texture, which still retained the fluffiness that we appreciate in our Italian breads. Rubbed with herbs and sea salt, it effectively whet our appetite for the meal to come.

Our appetizers definitely provided a healthy start to our dinner. The Insalta Palio was a generously portioned mixed green salad with feta cheese, egg, black olives, tomatoes, smoked turkey, tuna and ham. The meats added some dimension to the dish, and the tangy sauce gave it a sprightly refreshing taste. Not to mention, the egg was beautifully done – although hardboiled, it had a slightly wobbly consistency on the inside, which was simply lovely.

The Italian white asparagus came with a delicious Roma tomato jam, which was a tomato puree with port wine. Slightly tart with a natural sweetness, it paired wonderfully with the asparagus.

We highly recommend the two mains we tried, which were the Merluzzo Palio and Linguine All’ Aragosta. Merluzzo Palio is a pan-roasted cod with a gorgeous herb crust on top, and drizzled with balsamic vinegar reduction. Attention was on the fresh ingredients whose natural flavour shone through in this simple, but well-executed dish.

We loved the Linguine All’ Aragosta which came with a springy, fresh juicy lobster. The noodles, cooked al dente, has just the right amount of bite, and the ‘Arrabbiatata’ sauce holds a tinge of spiciness which deftly draws out the essence of the lobster.

To round off the meal, we had a sampling platter for three of the restaurant’s signature desserts. Their tiramisu was to-die-for, with each fluffy layer complementing the next, bursting with flavour, and simply melting our mouths. The Pera held a surprise in every bite, from the slow release of the aroma of the port wine, to the heart of creamy pannacotta in the centre. Finally, the Crostata, an exquisite chocolate tart with a mousse centre studded with hazelnuts, was a soul-satisfying way to end the meal.

Osia

There is a hush when you step into Osia. The hustle and bustle from the FestiveWalk outside subsides into an oasis of serenity in the restaurant, where time seems to slow down, beckoning you into a relaxing, deliciously paced meal. Settle down in one of the cozy window seats for some privacy; or if you’re feeling bold, take a seat in front of the interactive open kitchen to witness some live culinary action.

The starters took up an entire page on the menu, making it a mind-boggling, but happy problem for us in deciding what to order. A twist on the traditional bread basket, we began with a plate of the Stone Hearth flat bread in two flavours: macadamia pesto and truffled Kalamanta olive ($11 each). The handmade bread is fluffy and pillow soft, and it comes with a serving of homemade sauce on the side, which changes on a daily basis. On our visit, we had the macadamia ricotta sauce that came in a tube – kudos for the unique presentation! The sauce brought out the essence of the bread beautifully, especially that of the macadamia pesto bread, which was creamy and studded with macadamia nuts. The other option fared well too, with each bite releasing the aroma of the olives within.

Highly recommended was the seafood ice experience ($36), and who could resist it? A sensational paring of seafood and frozen cocktails to produce a wonderful combination of complementary tastes that tantalizes your taste buds. It comes in a set of six “test-tubes”, each containing a distinctive concoction that excites you and builds your anticipation for the next. Carrot ‘Pokka’ ice with lobster, Calamansi mojito ice with diver scallop, Quandong orange Campari ice with amaebi shrimp, Pineapple coconut ice with southern blue fin tuna, Sourz apple ice with Tasmanian salmon trout and Lychee martini with oyster. Each tube encases a piece of seafood that holds a whiff of the ocean’s freshness, atop a bed of iced cocktail that refreshes your palate for the meal ahead.

We had three appetizers in total! The third was the Butter poached lobster ($40) that was a ravishingly juicy, bouncy, meaty lobster encased in a sheet pasta and creamy buttery sauce. It comes with fermented bean which adds an asian dimension to the dish, a mild saltiness that contrasts with the sweet/sour mango salsa.

For the mains, try the Red Sea Bream. A slab of plump fish with skin seared to a crisp, it is served with lemongrass cous cous and curried cockles that are mouth-wateringly fragrant.

The Grainge black angus beef tenderloin ($68) was cooked in reduced port wine, with the alcohol evaporated, leaving a savoury flavour that melts into the tender meat. It sat atop a chestnut risotto that was bursting with the aroma of madeira truffle sauce and texture of mushrooms and bacon.

No matter how full you are, you have to try the dessert! We could not stop enthusing about how absolutely perfect it was! The Valrhona hot chocolate soup was simply the best way to end the meal. Luxuriously dark, rich, molten chocolate that begs you to lick the bowl clean, paired with a stimulating black peppered ice cream to balance the sweetness of the chocolate, this dessert is a legend in the making.

Forest

Nestled amidst lush greenery in a very exclusive section of Resorts World Sentosa, Forest looks ready to draw the crowds with its ground-breaking concept. Chef Sam Leong brings guests on a roller coaster experience with his Discovery menu – an 8-course or 10-course meal that surprises you with every dish contrasting the one preceding it. Be prepared for dishes that alternate between hot and cold temperatures, soft and crispy textures, and an array of intense flavours from spicy to savoury and sour. A 100% open-kitchen with unobstructed views of the chefs at work gives guests the chance to marvel at their skills.

We had the opportunity to try a number of signature dishes from the Discovery and ala carte menu. First up was an amuse bouche. Chilled cherry tomato with plum sherbert. With hints of sweet and sourness, the acidity of this appetizer was refreshing on the palate – a delicious beginning to an exciting meal ahead.

Immediately contrasting, the next dish was a wok-fried crispy duck pressed confit and yam served with mushroom sauce. Soft, slightly chunky yam paired with shreds of duck meat, this dish was a juxtaposition in itself.

We were completely taken in by the lovely presentation of Chef Sam Leong’s special recipe milky chicken broth. Served in a young coconut, the soup was chock full of ingredients – tender soft chicken, morel mushrooms, wild bamboo piths, fish maw and dried scallops. The broth was so flavourful that we slurped down every bit of it, and scraping out the coconut flesh to add on to the soup was a bonus that added a child-like enjoyment to savouring this bowl of soup for the soul.

The Chilean seabass was chargrilled to perfection. Smokey aromas enveloped the smooth plump juicy meat of this fresh fish, which was an absolute delight to eat. The sautéed spicy eggplant on the side added a fiery kick with the little red chilis sitting atop it.

The steamed scallop mousse in thai style, hot and sour consomme was a tangy, spicy dish that awakened our taste buds with every mouthful. Fluffy, with a texture possibly likened to softened fishballs, the simple taste of the scallops went beautifully with the consomme.

That previous dish whet our appetite for what came next - salt and pepper pork ribs which were uber crispy and crackly, covered with breadcrumbs rubbed with salt and pepper. the piquant tastes and aroma of spices wafting from the ribs made this dish a deliciously sinful one.

Another beautifully plated dish was the oven-baked yellow pumpkin pearl rice with XO sausages and pan-seared foie gras. The best thing about Forest is that the taste of the food never falls short of the expectations set by its presentation. Every grain of rice was plump, infused with a subtle flavour, and when mixed with the pumpkin, produced an orgasmic combination. Notably one of the most generous servings of foie gras, the best way to eat it is to allow the liver to sit on your tongue and let the juices roll over and simmer in your mouth to get the full effect before swallowing. Such is the superb quality of the food at Forest.

The Forest Delight was a platter comprising three mini desserts - crispy durian, chocolate banana ganache and lemongrass jello. recommend that you eat it in that exact order, so that you can mute the strong smell of the durian (regardless of whether you like it or not!) and end of on a fresh note. the chocolate banana ganache was rich, firm with a good bite, and the jello was refreshing with an interesting concoction of mint leaves, peach, blueberry and raspberry.

The staff were extremely hospitable, with small gestures that characterized what they described as 6-star service. Friendly, yet unobtrusive, they knew exactly when to entertain and when to leave guests to enjoy their meal. With such outstanding service, an exhilarating menu and gorgeous scenery, you will, without a doubt, have a wonderful experience dining at Forest.

Fiesta

okay i have a serious backlog of posts!!! omg. i haven't even finished editing the pictures. yikes!!!
anyway, during that period, i had been eating so many buffets that it was insane. honjin the day before, then fiesta. at resorts world!!! :D that's the best part of it. haha i love going there! it just feels so surreal haha. and the buffet was goooood. i think it's really worth it. cos it's a semi-buffet, where you order a main course, and it comes with the appetizer & dessert buffet. or, you can just order the buffet without the main course for $19++ which is damn worth it. i was half-full after the appetizers already haha.

i really enjoyed the salad bar!!!! omg this must be the most gorgeous array of salad that i have ever seen. of course i wasn't attracted to the veggies :P lol. it was the condiments that came with it which i had a whole lot of fun exploring!!

i'm so proud of my plate of salad okay. i loved it :D a pile of veggies with toppings like croutons, pine nuts, walnuts, chickpeas, almond flakes (basically all the nuts haha) and cheese, and drizzled (or rather drenched, if you know me :P) with italian, french and balsamic dressing. haha. i am so greedy. i can never just have one type of sauce on my food, i want everything!! like when i order subway, it is always dripping because i ask for way too many sauces. hahahaha.

other offerings on the appetizer buffet were the sashimi, grilled asparagus and this interesting honeydew wrapped in parma ham. unfortunately i dont really like honeydew, so i just plucked off the parma ham and gave the fruit to my sister haha. there were also different kinds of pre-made salads. i particularly liked the apple salad, which was very refreshing with is slightly tangy flavour.

there was also corn soup (yikes i don't like) and this lovely warm crusty bread which was DELICIOUS.

for my main course, i ordered the pan roasted salmon steak ($38). im glad i ordered it cos it felt kinda healthy in comparison to all the other meats on offer! it was rubbed with spices and came with a Guasca sauce (no idea what that is!) which i loved (:

zhen, who always seems to order all-in-one dishes haha, ordered the brazilian mix ($36) which included the Linguica sausage, Rib eye steak and Spring chicken with lime and garlic. looking at the size of the chicken, this was definitely a meal worthy of mention.

papa's marinated rib eye ($32) was a traditional steak dish that was beautifully done. tender and with a robust flavour.

the pineapple pork ribs ($32) sounded like a really interesting dish! i might say that it sounds more interesting that it actually is, although it might be because my expectations for this dish were kind of high. the meat was tender enough, but the pineapple taste was too insignificant i guess?

finally the desserts!!! i was so full by then :( i couldnt enjoy them properly, but i still thought they were really well done. i loved the variety of cakes and trio of shooters. every single one of them impressed me, even though i was full to bursting. the fondue was great too - i especially liked oreos dipped in chocolate!!! oh the revelation! it was so delicious xD

overall, a very good meal. great buffet, and good mains, at a reasonable price (:

Resorts World Sentosa & Chili’s!

My whole family went to Resorts World Sentosa yesterday! :D just for fun (: we didn’t go to Universal Studios or the casino though xP we just took pictures outside! haiz, my page-break doesn’t work! so this is gonna be a super long post xP
6 pretty girls outside universal studios! (:
right outside the casino, ooooooooh (:
we had dinner at Chili’s before that! (: sadly there are actually not many places to eat in rws ): we didn’t really want to go to all the high-end celebrity chef restaurants, and we didn’t want fast food/cafes either, so we were down to only a few limited choices. andddd we chose Chili’s! (: okay, i must first promote my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE. THE. MOLTEN. CHOCOLATE. CAKE.
ooh gorgeous. the ice cream on top was cold and slightly melting, running down the sides of the cake. the caramel drizzled on top was not too sweet, which was good. the chocolate cake was wonderfully soft and oh-so-chocolate-y and finally, when you sliced it open, the molten chocolate oozed out. (:
Since I’m on desserts, I might as well show you the other dessert we had – the apple tart. This one I didn’t try though :P but judging by the speed at which it was devoured, it must have been good too!
there was a promotion where with an order of a full-rack of ribs, the beer would be at $9.90. We ordered two racks of ribs, and so there were two mugs of beer - hoegaarden and san miguel. i’m not a beer-drinker so i didn’t taste it :/ but look at the sheer size of the hoegaarden :O amazing.
for the appetizer, we got nachos ($19.90)! my favourite! :D but we were slightly disappointed. looks like the one i had at T.G.I. Fridays right O.o but i think this one was better. at least there was more cheese and i loved the jalepeno chili!!!!! :D
For the mains, we had chicken fajitas. the chicken was quite nice and soft which was good (: i found it a bit stingy that they only provided 3 tortillas though! O.o
We ordered two kinds of ribs - first was the BBQ ribs - an all-time favourite! unfortunately, it was rather disappointing! ): the meat was kind of hard, unlike the good ones where you can easily peel it off the bone. the side dish of apple cinnamon was wonderful though! :D it was just nicely sweet and really tasty! (: each rack of ribs comes with two sides, so the other side we ordered for this dish was mashed potato.
finally, our last main dish was the honey mustard ribs! this one was much better in terms of the texture of the meat - it was much softer (: but there was not enough sauce!!!! ): it was still nice though - kind of reminded me of satay! :P
one thing i didn’t like about this restaurant was the service. really bad! the waitress who took our orders had a really unpleasant expression, and she was curt nearly to the point of being rude! and the waiter who served our ribs almost let the end of the ribs drop off the plate and he didnt even notice O.o
Us pretty girls again! :D papa was always the photographer so he isn’t in all of the photos xP
