Kombi Rocks

tell me, isn't this adorable??!!! :D gotta love these retro cars ;) Kombi Rocks is located in the heartlands of Serangoon/Yio Chu Kang and i really enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of this place (: because of its location, it ain't touristy at all, and is perfect for chilling on a quiet weekday night.

it's a really retro restaurant filled with quirky furniture from the past. fancy sitting in a barber's chair for dinner? haha. the food served there is kinda zichar style, and it was surprisingly good!!!

both of us ordered the hor fun and they had a few versions of it! i had the wok hei seafood hor fun ($6) and there was really the wok hei flavour!!!!! it was sooooo good. i was really astounded! haha, kinda didn't expect it from a restaurant which i'd initially thought was more of an 'experience' rather than a real foodie experience. pleasantly surprised ^^ the moment it was placed in front of me, i breathed in the aroma of the wok hei. yummmmmy. and it was chock full of ingredients as well!

so happy with my food!

sam ordered the wok hei beef hor fun ($8) which was super delicious as well :D we were very impressed! the chunks of beef were pretty tender, and the sauce was delicious as well (:

darling slurping on our Kickapoo float ($6) haha. it was a slightly strange combination, but not too bad! just because i don't like root beer xP haha. it's a super big glass! two of us were super full after that.

a really satisfying meal at reasonable prices! (: although it's more expensive than eating at your normal zichar coffee shops, but it was a great experience and still a pretty budget-friendly date ^^

P.S. all their cars (e.g. the one shown above) are for rent!

Jerry's BBQ & Grill

it's been such a crazily busy time lately that we've hadn't had time to go very far in search of food. but it does give us a chance to visit hidden finds nearby which are less popular, but no less delicious :)

famous for it's prata (although i've never actually tried the prata there before :P) jalan kayu also houses a few food places which are worth trying out! :) one place which i WANT to try, but have yet to try is spizza for friends. but this time when we went there, we visited Jerry's which is your typical western food joint, with great quality food.

the first thing i noticed when i was there was that Jerry's claimed to be the first restaurant to come up with buffalo wings and fried mushrooms! hmm not sure how true is that, but anyway, their buffalo wings were AWESOME. they offer three levels of spiciness - smoking ($12.95), intensi-fire ($12.95) and chef's challenge ($13.95). well, i was kinda intimidated by the latter two names, and anyway yi can't take spiciness, so we went with the smoking buffalo wings. they were ultra crispy :D i absolutely relished the crunch of the beautifully fried chicken skin when i bit into it. and the loved the slightly sweet, slightly tangy sauce that it was slathered with :) YUMYUMYUM.

the nachos supreme ($12.95) was just the way i loved it. a generous pile of fresh tortilla chips topped with melted cheddar and mozzarella cheese. a few of the tortilla chips were slightly soggy, but i dont suppose you can fault that considering they were weighed down by the amount of cheese :D it came with sour cream, salsa and chili con carne on the side. i loved the chili con carne! not sure whether this is the first time i'm actually eating it. haha. but it was really delicious :)

on second thought, we should probably only have ordered half a slab of the memphis style hickory smoked barbecue pork ribs (half $19.95, full $32.95). not that it wasnt good! it was. that was the problem. it was too much of good stuff! :P haha we just had too much meat that day. the ribs were beautifully done, barbecued for 5 hours, and they were tender and meaty with a good amount of sauce. each dish comes with a serving of steamed vegetables, and one choice of the following sides: baked beans, potato salad, baked potato, french fries.

finally, we had the roasted beef tenderloin and pulled pork combo ($32.95). this dish really gave us the best of both worlds. initially i wasnt too impressed by the pulled pork. on its own, i found it stringy and a tad dry. but...dip it in the bbq sauce that it came with, and it was completely transformed! :D the sauce complemented it perfectly and gave it a wonderfully refreshing flavour that was irresistible. the roasted beef tenderloin lived up to its name - it was one of the most tender pieces of beef i've ever eaten, it practically melted in my mouth :D

Seletar Hill Restaurant

There are some restaurants that my family loves going back to again and again. Ever since i could remember, my family has visited Seletar Hill Restaurant at least a few times a year :D we almost always order the same food when we go there, and i can remember our usual dishes off the top of my head xD this is one of my favourite restaurants and i'm sharing it with all of you :D

my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE, MUST-ORDER dish at this restaurant is their braised beancurd ($12, all sizes are medium unless otherwise stated). okay don't shoot me, i know it sounds normal. but seriously, this is the BEST hong shao dou fu ever. no where else can i find this version of it :( how sad. the sauce is different from the typical versions. for one, it's much tastier, and it's slightly sweet, sour and savoury which is a really exciting play on your tastebuds xD

the dry-sauteed stringbeans with minced pork ($14) is super duper tasty!! :D each crunchy stalk of stringbean is covered in the shrimp sauce, and remember to polish off all the little lovely bits of minced pork! :D

the 'tung po' pork with steamed/fried buns ($15) is one of the chef's recommended dishes. the pork belly is lovingly braised until the fats melt in your mouth. they are meant to be wrapped in the bun, but the buns are so tasty they can be eaten on their own dipped in the sauce! (: i prefer the steamed buns to the fried ones! healthier :D
yupps, so these are my favourite dishes in this restaurant. all my childhood nostalgia :D
