oversea restaurant is a cantonese-themed restaurant that originated from malaysia! seems to have been quite famous there, and there was quite a bit of excitement on its arrival in singapore! there was a whole long article in the sunday times all about it, and i decided that i just HAD to visit this place and try out all the recommended dishes on the list. i barely even looked at the menu, i just ordered based on the recommendations i had copied down and they proved to be really good choices! (:
let's start with the most sought after dish for the day - the char siew. apparently this dish is SO POPULAR that you have to pre-order it when you make reservations at the restaurant. gosh, is the demand that great?! well, i didn't want to take any chances, so i ordered it over the phone as recommended. by the way, there are two seatings for dinner: 6.30pm-8pm and 8.15pm-10pm. papa nearly foamed when he saw the price of the char siew :P heehee. at $30 for a medium serving, this must be the most expensive slab of char siew we've ever eaten. lol. but it was GOOD. worth every cent (or dollar) in my opinion. the top was nicely fried, slightly charred such that it had a wonderfully smoky aroma wafting out from it. the meat was tender, with just the right amount of fat to give it a melt-in-your-mouth kind of softness, and it was beautifully glazed with a generous amount of barbeque sauce. oooooh char siew heaven!!! :D it is recommended that you get the medium size (instead of small) for 4 people and above because it is just so yummy that the tiny small serving would definitely not be enough.
the stir fried kailan with ginger juice and white wine ($12 small) was probably the least remarkable dish we had that day, although it was good as well. while the ginger juice and white wine sounded delicious, when it came to the taste, i felt that it could have been more fragrant. i couldnt really taste the wine and the ginger could have been slightly stronger as well. the vegetable itself was yummy though - very fresh and the stems were super crunchy (:
the beancurd with petola ($12 small) was a simple homely dish which i loved. ah, i just realised that petola is the veggie that came with the dish! haha! i was wondering what it was. i just googled it. but i didnt try the veggie so i have no idea how it tastes. the tofu was nicely stirfried (it had a bit of wok-hei which made it lovely) and the simple starchy sauce complemented it perfectly.
the oversea special fried rice ($12 small) was quite a substantial amount! we ordered the small size, but after splitting into five portions, we each had quite a full bowl of rice! great (: it was nice and fragrant, with some slightly over-fried pieces of rice which added an interesting texture to the dish, together with the french beans. although i felt that the french beans tasted a bit raw, but it added a unique touch to the rice. there were also chunks of yam inside (yippee!) which made it even lovelier.
lastly, we had the braised sliced belly pork with salted fish in claypot ($16 small). i have to say that oversea does their meats really well!!! i loved this, as well as the char siew. this was super duper awesomely tasty!!! it was slightly like the gong bao sauce, but a much nicer version i think. it had the fiery kick of that kind of sauce, and it coated every thin sliver of pork belly. it was just so so so addictive xD
