doing sponsorship for UR has definitely given me many opportunities to try out a whole range of eateries which i've never knew existed! and it has given me a chance to understand the behind-the-scenes of the eateries, like the background and culture of the dishes which is really quite fascinating!! (: so many places to eat around school! :D
the first restaurant i went to was hong guo at bugis junction. there are a few outlets of this if i'm not wrong! it's under a company, Katrina Holdings, which owns a range of restaurants including a bunch of them at clarke quay (: i was so prepared to go there for work that i didn't bring my camera (for once! haha). so the photos i've got are from christine! yikes, keep borrowing her photos xP
doesn't this look absolutely gorgeous?! and it was so delicious too! the pumpkin fries with salted egg yolk ($6.80) were a wonderful blend of crumbly pastry (i would liken it to something similar to the char siew sou pastry), over a layer of salted egg yolk encasing a sweet pumpkin paste. when we bit into it, the filling was piping hot and burnt our lips but we couldn't resist gobbling it down! yeah, it's deep fried, but the fact that it was made of pumpkin made it feel 'healthy'? haha. anyway, it was so light and delicious that we finished it easily!
this restaurant is mainly a yunan chinese restaurant, however, they have dishes from other parts of china as well, such as the sze chuan chicken in a basket ($7.50). it is a crisply fried chicken, covered with a spicy batter, and for added effect, tossed with a generous (read: abundant) amount of chilis. initially, we didn't feel that it was very spicy, but the more we ate it, the more our lips and tongue started to burn haha. what a fiery dish!
also a specialty of the restaurant would be the zhao pai mian xian ($8) which is a HUMONGOUS bowl of noodles with 15 types of ingredients in a broth that is boiled for hours. topped with a layer of oil to keep it warm, this is a homely dish that is good for nursing colds (:
