hi!! (: okay this is kinda lame, because i only tried one dish in this restaurant, but i loved it so much i have to write about it anyway!! (: i've been wanting to try NamNam for the longest time, since i fell in love with vietnamese food after trying it in vietnam. but the queue here is always so long! good thing is that we went there before the dinner crowd, and so we managed to get a seat very easily! (: but i really don't like the layout of this place because it's super cramped!!! there was literally no space for anything on us except ourselves. ended up putting our bags on the floor :( there is barely enough space to walk! haha weiling was commenting that it's kinda like the roadside stalls in vietnam lol :P haha quite.

but the food more than made up for it!!! (: both of us went for the pho beef steak slices ($8.90), and it was soooo good!! of course not to the standard in vietnam, but it's definitely one of the best in singapore that i've tried! ^^ the soup broth was robust and so tasty! and there was quite a nice portion of beef slices in it. i always love how pho seems so healthy! i can never understand how the vietnamese can make something as bland-tasting as rice noodles taste SO GOOD. i absolutely love it!! 

and also loved all the various condiments on the side that we could add to our food ^^ i added a little bit of fish sauce, which was probably not necessary since the soup was tasty enough and i added so little that i couldn't taste the fish sauce anyway :p but i super loved the chili that is meant for pho (it's written on the bottle). it went so perfectly with the whole bowl of goodness :)) a match made in heaven :)

i would love to come back and try the banh mi sometime! it's like the vietnamese version of subway hehe. looks yummeh!!!

i havent really tried many vietnamese restaurants around singapore. the only other one was Pho 99 which was not bad (: Viet Express is located quite nearby and it's even nicer! (:

we were really starving by the time we reached the restaurant, so everything on the menu looked good! :D and tasted good (okay it was REALLY good, not just because we were hungry k). of course, like i always say, it will never match up to the food we ate in vietnam (haha i bet my dearest bestie will turn her nose up at the standard of food), but the entire restaurant is run by vietnamese people, so i would suppose that aside from the lack of authentic ingredients which can't be helped, the food was goooooood! (: the fresh vietnamese spring rolls ($8 for four) were refreshingly tasty, and came with an interesting peanut paste sauce with chopped peanuts. the combination was one which i've never tried before and is pretty interesting!

the other appetizer we got was the green papaya salad with prawn and pork ($10) which is really two thumbs up! :D i loved the slightly raw papaya strips with the fresh prawns and other veggies, and the sweet chili sauce went perfectly with this dish.

there was a whole variety of noodles to chose from in this restaurant! i ate the sliced beef and beef ball ($11) noodle, a traditional favourite xD the soup here is especially fragrant, i would say its the closest i've gotten so far to the pho i had in vietnam (: i love how vietnamese soup is not just savoury, but also slightly sweet, such a nice twist to an otherwise potentially bland dish. and the rice noodles were slurpily smooth heehee. nice! the reason why i said viet express is nicer than pho 99 is because the soup is tastier, slightly more full-bodied and flavourful

zhen ate the sliced beef glass noodle ($11), which is basically the glass noodle version of mine. haha actually it's pretty similar! i enjoyed a bit of the glass noodle as well cos there were a few strands in my bowl heehee xD

mummy chose the special vietnamese kuay teow with prawn and pork ($11) which was slightly different from ours! as in the soup was different. i don't really know how to describe it. it was nice as well, but not the typical pho kind of soup.

yi deviated from the norm of choosing noodles and got the rice with special marinated chicken ($12). i didn't try the chicken, but the rice was pretty fragrant (:

the drinks were nice too! (: i loved the soursop fruit shake ($3.50)!!! :D awesome stuff. it was chock full of the fruit and tasted wonderful.

Pho 99 Vietnamese Delights

After coming back from vietnam, my family has been hunting around for good vietnamese food in singapore (: NOT EASY. in the first place, there aren't many vietnamese restaurants in singapore! and after trying the food in vietnam, it is IMPOSSIBLE to find equally good food here xP before going to vietnam, i never liked vietnamese food. the only time i ever tried it was many years ago, in this place at holland V. i found it bland and rather unappetizing. but ever since going to vietnam this april, my opinion of their food has changed completely! xD I LOVE IT! :D especially their rice noodles. i never knew it could actually taste so good :O

Pho 99 is a vietnamese restaurant owned by a vietnamese! (: so the food was pretty authentic i guess?

Vietnamese Spring Roll (Goi Cuon)! 2 pieces for $4. Traditional vietnamese rice paper with shrimp, rice noodles, lettuce and fresh mint. the vietnamese are really big on rice related foods. and they have a good reason to be! because their rice stuff are just so awesomely tasty xD i wonder why our kway teow and bee hoon taste soooo bland, compared to vietnamese food made of rice. hmph. we should honestly learn from them! im so happy ngan just gave me a HUGE packet of vietnamese rice noodles - i can't wait to cook something with it!!! :D the spring roll was refreshing, with the mint leaves in it, and dipped in the homemade chili sauce, it was just heavenly (:

the most famous vietnamese dish ever - beef noodles (pho bo)!!! $8. pho in different parts of vietnam tastes different! i tried the ones in hanoi and ho chi minh city. and i must say i liked the hanoi one a lot LOT more! (: (: i miss it so much!! the version in this restaurant is....the hanoi-singapore version? haha. i guess it tries to exemplify the hanoi version, but it's just not as tasty xP the AUTHENTIC one in hanoi is boiled with beef and chicken bones (if i'm not wrong) overnight and for many hours. so it's SUPER TASTY! :O the one here is pretty decent, but it's only a shadow of the original version :P it was probably tweaked to suit singaporeans' tastes too i suppose >.<

now, the vietnamese coffee is special. it's REALLY REALLY GOOD. there are different grades of vietnamese coffee, mostly from the brand Trung Nguyen. i have no idea what grade of vietnamese coffee was served in the restaurant but it was superb. i'm really not a coffee-person - i don't like it because i'm super sensitive to caffeine. just a few mouthfuls and i can forget about sleeping already. and i'm someone who loves sleep xD so, i don't drink much coffee, or tea. but i prefer tea to coffee. anyway, at this restaurant, my opinion of coffee was totally altered. it was nearly an epiphany! okay, that would be an exaggeration, but the coffee was really good. there wasn't even any sugar in it  but i LOVED it! i only drank a mouthful, but it was really really good. try it and see! it's different from the kopi we drink here x) and it is served in a really cute way.
