upper thomson really does have a lot of nice food places! :D HAHA to all those people who live in the east ;) i have so many friends living in the east, and they're always talking about the nice food there. well, that's true i suppose. but you know how lazy i am to travel, unless i'm out with my family and we have the car ;) so living at upper thomson has its perks! and let me emphasize, IT IS NOT ULU! :p haha.
so, you may ask, where can you find affordable and tasty peranakan food? (: My answer: Ivins! i know there is this popular peranakan restaurant called blue ginger, but it's pretty expensive if im not wrong. i'd love to try it someday! but in the meantime, i'm content with Ivins xD
babi pongteh ($8.90) is stewed pork belly in a rich brown soybean gravy. it is super tasty! one of my favourite nyonya dishes. when i eat at ivins, i will split my rice into different portions and drench each portion with different types of sauces xD because they are all so tasty and appetizing! the babi pongteh sauce might be slightly salty, as all bean sauces are, but it is absolutely tasty. and the stewed pork belly is so tender, it simply melts in the mouth.
sayur lodeh ($6), stewed curry vegetables, is my veggie of choice when i go to a peranakan restaurant. it contains a mix of vegetables including cabbage, long beans, carrots and tau pok. the curry is wonderfully lemak (coconut-y!) but it has a fairly light texture, so it won't make you feel bloated and sinful afterwards.
ayam curry ($8.90) is traditional nyonya chicken curry. all the curries for each dish taste different! haha, i wonder why? but it just makes the culinary experience so much more interesting! xD this curry is a delightful explosion of spices. i can't identify them, but it's really fragrant and yummy! :D
the ikan kuah nanas ($8) faced a lot of objection when mummy suggested it. after all it's fish - red snapper in tamarind gravy with pineapples. i can't say that it was good, because i'm still not really into fish that has the slightest bit of fishiness or bones. but it was not bad :p the fish is slightly fishy, but thankfully not overwhelming so. which is why, EAT IT WITH THE GRAVY. the gravy is awesome! :D any sour goes for me :D it is so wonderfully appetizing and it overpowers any fishy taste which the fish might have, which is definitely a good thing (:
and who can resist dessert here? i always have a hard time deciding between the gula melaka sago ($2.50) and buboh cha cha ($2.50) when i'm here. i love them both! this time i chose the gula melaka sago. there is something about coconut milk which i absolutely LOVE. actually, i love anything coconut-y :p this is a lovely combination of creamy coconut milk, sweet gula melaka and squishy little sago bits (: it's just perfect :D
the buboh cha cha is awesome as well. again coconut milk with lovely sweet potato, yam and squishy jelly bits in it. actually i don't really like the jelly bits - too sticky for my liking. but i love the rest of it xD
and of course, not forgetting chendol ($2.50)! (: the one at Ivins is superb as well, just like all the other food.
with so many dishes (and desserts!) to chose from, how can you say no to this lovely place?! (: (:
