Twenty-three

Another year older, another year wiser :)

This year is going to be one with so many changes - with graduation, starting work, and who knows what else? - and along with it, more experiences. This year's birthday was different, somewhat. I always make a big deal out of my own birthday, and god knows how difficult that makes things for Sam :P hahaha. I always unintentionally spoil his surprises, whoops! I'm also the one planning the entire celebration with the family (actually it's just food, haha cos I'm the foodie here right?) and I get to choose whatever I want to eat. Yay! (greedy me :P) It's never a birth-DAY for me, but rather a birth-WEEK. Hahaha.

This year I don't know whether it's just that I can't be bothered (growing old? :O) or maybe I've mellowed, but I didn't think much about my birthday coming up as I would usually do. I like to think it's the latter ;) Perhaps with stuff going on at home and everyone just getting settled into their jobs, I didn't really expect them to have time to celebrate my birthday with me. But they did :) And it was not so much of a "celebration" but more like just a get-together with everyone and it was great! :)) I guess when you haven't seen each other in what-seems-like ages, every gathering is a celebration in itself :) Just spending time with these people makes me feel so so lucky that I have them in my life <3

Met up with the hopers finally! Since the longest time. I chose this picture because Scott insists that it looks better (probably more like because he looks better, while I look huge because I'm in the front), but since he organised this dinner and we didn't get to celebrate his birthday, so shall give it to him ;) hehe. So many things going on that are so exciting!!! Liying's first day of work, me & Mel being future colleagues (yayyy!) and both Scott & Shan's exciting news ^^ Thanks so much for dinnering on a Thursday night when most of you have work the next day! :)

Biggest surprise of all was my "lunch with Sam" at Potato Head Folk! This was the surprise that I spoiled for him haha. And well, luckily I just conceded to go along with his plan (haha otherwise he'll get all stressed againnnn) even though I was almost ready to back out of lunch because it was so late already!!! Otherwise he'll have to drag me kicking and screaming to this place (haha kidding). And when we reached, I headed right to a two-person table before I looked ahead just slightly and got the hugest shock of my life!! :O AWW MAN :'))) Haha I couldn't stop blabbering with shock. These guys are the sweetest :)) Totally reminded me of how they surprised me at Marina Barrage like what, 3 years ago? Omg how time flies!!!! And look how far we've come since then :) THANK YOU SO MUCH <3<3<3 love y'all :') and if only Rachel was here! Just missing her to make this picture complete :) The decor of Potato Head Folk made such a great backdrop for this photo! Review will be up in a few days ^^

And YAYYYYY, they bought me exactly what I needed!! And the colour is too gorgeous. So ME. I love it! ^^ And whee I can finally get rid of my old ugly pair of slippers. Gotta thank Sam for his elaborate plan of helping to get me to the gathering and for the present idea! ;) *mwacksssss* thanks a million baby :')

Even the exterior of Potato Head Folk looks so nice!!! We just had to grab a random stranger and ask him to take a photo for us :p

Hee <3 And for the rest of that day, we enjoyed some really nice couple time, finally! :) This boy has been so busy with work. Which is not a bad thing, since it seems like he enjoys it! :)) Really glad that it turned out well for him <3 But also, really enjoy the times when he can put his work aside and we can have a dateeeee! We spent most of the day lazing around and chatting actually, since we hadn't had the chance to sit around and talk for the longest time! And we had dinner at Jamie's Italian ^^ One year after this place opened in Singapore, I was so excited to try it!!! I dined there last year when I was in York too :) And being so greedy as usual, I ordered quite a lot of food :P Sorry for the bad photos - I don't think you can actually see how they really look like, sigh. The lighting was just too dim. But the food was pretty good! Hehe luckily I did all my research before, and knew what to order. Their menu changes quite a bit though, so some stuff I wanted wasn't available.

Jamie's Walnut Salad ($9.50)
This looks like an absolute mess! :'( I'm really sad okay. I couldn't even save these pictures with iPhoto. I ordered this salad because of how pretty and colourful it looked in a photo, but sigh, can't see anything here. You can take a look at the photo here instead. For $9.50, this portion of salad was tiny. It was really really little!!! And I could barely find any walnuts in it?! While it was tasty, especially with the aged balsamic dressing, I felt that it really wasn't any value for money. Thankfully, all the other dishes were really generously portioned.

I've heard nothing but praise for the 30-day matured prime rib, but that was just too expensive for us. Instead, Sam opted for the 220g Rump Steak ($28.50), and it turned out to be pretty good too! It was a really juicy and flavourful slab marinated in its own juices - and was that a hint of red wine I tasted?  Albeit a tad tough (perhaps because it was on the skinny side), the taste fully made up for it.

I went for the really sinful-sounding Jamie's Italian Signature Porchetta ($35). Think slow cooked pork belly that was delightfully tender, filled with a stuffing made of herbs, garlic and spices. I loved how well cooked the pork belly was (so so soft), and the cacophony of flavours that the stuffing lent to it. Halfway into the dish, I found it a bit too flavourful though, especially with the equally savoury fennel crackling on the side. Perhaps more pork and less stuffing would have been a better balance.

It was hilarious how Sam & I had the exact same reservations about ordering Jool's Favourite Sicilian Tuna Fusilli ($14/$21) because of our bad experience of pasta in Sicily :P This dish came highly recommended in all the reviews I read though! And we were really pleasantly surprised by it! The spicy tuna sauce was a refreshing contrast from the meaty main courses we'd ordered and helped to cleanse our palate in between dishes. We ordered the tasting portion and felt that it was quite a lot already!

Although we were already like 90% full by the end of all that food, I still went ahead and got dessert :P After hearing so much about the Epic Brownie ($11.50), I simply couldn't resist! And it certainly lived up to expectations :D  A warm, fudge brownie - this was so sinful and so good. Can't imagine eating it alone though. And I could have done without the almond ice cream. Yucky. But then again, I'm just biased. I would still order the brownie again if I come back.

Despite the fact that this restaurant has been in town for a year, Jamie Oliver's reputation obviously has kept its popularity on high. The restaurant was packed when we were there and I doubt there is any room for walk-ins. Reservations should be made a couple of weeks in advance!

(first) Vday in Singapore (:

hello! (: finally midterms are over!! for now at least. still have one coming up next week yikes >.< which i haven't studied for at all. but just taking a breather now before having to chiong during the break week. sometimes i wonder why i still feel so busy despite only having three mods!! WHY??!! okay i've got to admit that i am significantly freer in terms of schoolwork as compared to other semesters, but maybe it's also because i'm trying to do other things outside of school, which do take up time as well. yknow, even watching shows is in my plan :p haha i am FINALLY almost reaching the end of the 1st season of Suits since starting on it like three months ago. whuuuut. ikr :( i'm just hopeless at it. but i really love the show btw!! hehh okay so i have the tendency to waffle around the main point when i'm writing my blog posts :P oops! (*sigh* reminds me of how i completely neglected to write a conclusion for my coy law paper yesterday. KILL ME. going to do so badly for that paper >.<)

***WARNING: rambling post with lots of pictures ahead***

anyway because of all my midterms, that explains this very belated Vday post. this year was the first time we were spending Valentine's Day in Singapore :) last year's was in Italy, and boy, that was quite a different experience :P loved this year's Valentines Day :') not because of all the activities we did that day (and honestly, i always feel Valentine's Day is probably the most un-special day for any couple because everybody is celebrating it on that day), but because of the quality time we spent together :)) haven't had the luxury of time to just enjoy each other's company for the longest time! although it was really just right before the midterm week, but i guess the fact that we made the effort to put our school work aside and just go out without our laptops was really a huge step! (:

hello Sentosa!!!

it was super sunny that day, but I'm so glad that we were going somewhere sheltered instead hehe.

we went to the SEA Aquarium!!!!! :D so happy that i finally visited this place, and great that there were no queues! although it was still pretty crowded inside with tonnes of tourists.

managed to get student price ($28)! (Y)

pretty difficult to get a decent photo of us because the lighting was so blueee. but lots of love anyway xx

i was WOW-ed by this magnificent sight when i stepped into this area :)) this photo doesn't do justice to how blue the water was, and how colourful all the corals and fishes are! i'm not a big fan of fish (whether as animals or food haha) but this sight really amazed me :) the colours were so vibrant and alive!

and i never knew WHY everyone who came to the SEA Aquarium had to take photos of the jellyfish!! haha but finally understood when i was there :P they're really cute!! and the colours were fascinating. though i know it's really because of the light that shines into the water, but it's still pretty darn amazing and beautiful.

hee, Sam still remembered what the guy from Italy told him ;) about how they always give chocolate and flowers to girls on valentine's day ^^ (i told sam to skip the vday flowers because they're just ridiculously expensive!!!!! he pampers me with flowers all the time on the other 364 days of the year anyway :) <3). got a mini bottle of Merlot as well (love these tiny bottles! they're so adorable and handy), and we just sat in front of this huge aquarium talking, laughing and...spamming instagram with photos hahaha. felt like we hadn't talked like that in ages! or at least, i did :P (i was completely exhausted from talking by the end of that day haha). when i'm on a roll, i can go on talking forever, and the boy just listened, and hugged me and laughed with me :) and of course he talked as well haha, but it's really sweet how he's becoming a much better listener :*)

after that, we headed for a really late dinner at L'entrecôte! they were super crowded on Valentine's Day and i think it was pretty obvious that their staff weren't used to such a huge volume of customers.  we reached at 8.30pm and i think by the time our main dish arrived, it was already past 9pm. but the staff were still very attentive when we called for service, and they gave all the ladies a gorgeous rose, which was really nice of them! :)

so L'entrecôte is famous for the one-and-only (literally) main course, which is their Plat du Jour Entrecôte Steak ($29.90, classic portion).

thank goodness for the walnut steak that was served first, because we were ravenous at 8.30pm. this was a very light salad with yummy toasted walnuts on top! my only gripe is that there was no sauce at all! so it was rather bland/bitter. it helped tide over our hunger just a bit though.

till our main dish came! :D :D yummmmmm. it smelled so good. the portion of the steak was just right (especially with all the fries) and was slathered with L'entrecôte's "legendary sauce" which was really tasty! i can't really pinpoint what was in it (some secret ingredient haha) but it tasted like a combination of brown sauce/mushroom/mustard. savoury and slightly tangy, which went perfectly with the slab of meat. the fries were delicious too!! i probably looked really unglamorous but i was shovelling them into my mouth because i was so hungry. the fries were really crisp and VERY tasty. and for those who really love it so much, you'll be happy to know that it's free-flow! after one round of fries we couldn't eat anymore already though. haha.

we also ordered the half-baked chocolate cake ($14) which was pretty yummy! (: it was fluffy and delicate, and went perfectly with the vanilla ice-cream. *i've gotta add a disclaimer that my opinion is now biased because of the molten chocolate cake i ate the very next day at morganfields (which i will definitely blog about because it was SUPER GOOD). the one at l'entrecôte was not too shabby, but not the best either!

新年快乐! Kueh Lapis Recipe

hello! (: rushing out this post for you guys because CNY is just around the corner! i'm sure many people looooove kueh lapis, don't you? it's so sinful (especially after seeing this recipe, you'll know), but it's just so decadent ^^ it's probably one of the most expensive CNY goodies though, which is why mummy asked me to try to make it. and after doing so, i can totally understand why the price is justified. beware: this takes LOTS of time, and an infinite amount of patience. (i was starving for my dinner but had to keep putting it off so that i could finish this).

soooo no time to waste, let's get into the recipe!

(gotta say that my kueh lapis is not the most photogenic....i'll try again next year haha!)

Ingredients:
500g butter
20 egg yolks
8 egg whites (i will be posting another recipe soon on how you can utilise the rest of the egg whites. don't waste them!)
200g sugar
300g condensed milk
220g plain flour
½ tsp baking powder
4 tsp mixed spices (or 2 tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp nutmeg, ¼ tsp ginger, ¼ tsp cardamom)*
1 tsp vanilla essence
3 tbsp rum (optional)
butter/coconut oil for greasing (i used coconut oil and loved the flavour that it gave my kueh lapis!)

*gotta add a disclaimer here: i skipped all the spices except for cinnamon cos i didn't have the rest at home, and my kueh lapis kinda lacked the actual taste. so DO NOT skip the spices!

1. Sift flour and spices together.
2. Beat butter and condensed milk together till white, then set aside.
3. Whisk egg whites and baking powder till stiff (at medium speed). Add in sugar while whisking, and egg yolks one at a time, only adding in the next one when the previous has been fully incorporated.
4. Stir in the vanilla essence (and rum) till well combined.
5. Fold in the butter mixture, followed by the flour mixture till it resembles a curdled pot of cream.
6. Preheat the oven to 200 deg C.
7. Line a baking tin with grease paper, and grease with a bit of butter/coconut oil.
8. Spread a thin layer of batter (suggested 100g for the first layer) onto the base of the baking tin. Bake  on the lowest rack in the oven for 7-8min or until lightly golden brown.
9. Remove the tin from the oven and brush the cooked layer with a bit of butter/coconut oil.
10. Flatten the cake slightly and prick all over with a toothpick.
11. Spread on the next layer (suggested 60-80g for subsequent layers) and bake for 7-8min or till lightly golden brown.
10. Repeat steps 9-11 with the remaining batter.
11. For the last last layer, turn the oven down to 180 deg C and bake on the middle rack for 15min till golden brown.
12. Remove from the oven and separate the kueh lapis from the baking tin.
13. Turn the kueh lapis onto a surface to cool and remove the grease paper.
14. Cut into slices and serve.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

it's two more hours to the New Year!!! here are just some photos from the last week to round up the end of 2013 (:

look who's back in time for 2014!!! :))))) so happy to have my darling boy back! ^^ these three weeks without him seemed to pass reaaaaally slowly, but it only just made me treasure our relationship even more :') it has been a pretty crazy year year for us - going on exchange together was quite an experience :p but I'm really thankful for everything cos I think we've turned out much better after that <3

had the Glitter & Glamour Masquerade Tea Party with my favourite girls just over the weekend! ^^ hehe sounds like a pretty complicated theme aye? :p haha but it was so much fun dressing up and i'm so proud of the table setting which looked like a real tea party! this picture isn't very good, but anyway, it was so much fun! big thanks to the sweet girls who all came over early to help prepare for this! feel kinda bad that they had to do so much work, but really appreciate it! :)

love these gorgeous ladies! :) <3 as you can see, we all put in lots of effort to make sure we fit the Glamour theme of the day. i guess it was pretty funny that we all dressed to the nines to have a tea party at home, but it was really fun!! (: and we should totally do this again (:

isn't the set up so pretty?! :) haha i really like it. so happy that i managed to find all these tea party-worthy props at home! ^^

and for the menu that day, i made Earl Grey Cupcakes and a Maple Bacon Quiche! ^^ super love the flavour of the earl grey cupcakes, which was really punchy!! they could have been more fluffy though. still working on that ;)

Earl Grey Cupcakes
Ingredients:
150ml milk
4 earl grey teabags
150g plain flour
80g caster sugar
1.5 tbsp baking powder
50g unsalted butter
2 eggs
a pinch of salt

1. Gently warm the milk in a pan over moderate heat. Add the earl grey teabags to the milk. When the milk starts bubbling, remove it from the heat. Leave the teabags in the milk to infuse for at least an hour, or at best overnight in the fridge.
2. Pre-heat the oven to 170 degrees C. Line a cupcake tray with cupcake cases.
3. Stir the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder together in a big bowl. Mix in the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs.
4. Strain the teabags from the milk. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg gently. Add the milk to the egg and whisk again gently.
5. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and mix together for a couple of minutes until fully combined.
6. Spoon the mixture into the cupcake cases. Bake in pre-heated oven for 20-25min until risen & golden.

Maple-bacon Quiche
Ingredients:
100g bacon
1 small onion, thinly sliced
3 tbsp maple syrup
3 large eggs
200g heavy cream
2 tsp thyme leaves
1 tsp salt

For the crust:
2¼ cup flour
1 tsp sat
1 tsp sugar
150g butter, cut into small pieces
¼ cup water

1. For the crust: Combine flour, salt and sugar. Add butter and mix until mixture is like breadcrumbs. Add water slowly until dough just holds together. Shape dough into a ball, cling wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour to 2 days.
2. On a slightly floured surface, rol out dough. Press it into a quiche pan. Prick bottom with a fork.
3. Preheat oven to 210 deg C. Line dough with parchment and cover with baking weights. Bake for 20min or until edges are just firm. Remove weights and parchment, bake for 20min more or until slightly golden. Let it cool.
4. Reduce oven to 190 deg C. Fry bacon in a pan till crisp. drain on paper towels and let it cool slightly. break into pieces.
5. Heat up oil from bacon. Add onion and cook till translucent. add maple syrup and 1 tbsp water and cook further for 1min. Let it cool slightly.
6. Whisk together eggs, cream, thyme, salt and add onion mixture. Pour into cooled tart shell. Scatter half the bacon on top.
7. Bake quiche till edges of egg mixture just set (15min). Scatter remaining bacon on top and bake for another 20min till puffed and golden brown. Serve (:

another year has just flown by :O how amazingly fast is that. this year has been a rather weird one of sorts. 2012 was a blast for me (sorry the pictures all died on me >.< i think i deleted them accidentally :'( ) and so perhaps this year was much less outstanding in a sense. but i'm still very thankful for opportunities that have come along my way this year. more importantly, always so grateful for the people around me who've encouraged & loved me :')

just wanna share this article i read again recently (thanks SK for reminding me of this article and the other one, and for everything<3). i've actually glanced through it a number of times previously, but i never really understood it till i read it again yesterday. i guess it's especially pertinent to me now, which is why i read through it so thoroughly and made it a point to understand it. and so this is a New Year's Resolution for 2014, which is something i think is finally realistic enough for me to fulfil, though the last part would require some effort, and that's what makes it fulfilling:

to do things with love, love more, and love everybody :)

next year is going to be a one with lots of changes and new experiences, and i'm really excited, yet apprehensive at the same time. i really hope it turns out well!! xx wishing everyone an AWESOME 2014! :D

Housewarming Party (I)

so we're finally all moved in and ready to show our house to people! ^^ haha. it took such an incredibly long time, but really glad that it was a job well done in the end :)) the housewarming we had last week was just one of a string that we'll probably we having. hehe can't wait for my friends to come over! christmas x new year x cny! so many upcoming festivals to celebrated. and i'm so excited :D

well i really wanted to put a video here to show you all the wonderful food we catered, but i can't seem to find a way to embed a video from instagram here! >:( blogger annoys me sometimes really. anyway, if you want to see the video, here's the link! :) it was sooooo good! wish my appetite was good that day so that i could devour everything. but it's alright, i've got a new mission to keep my eating in check. i'm really too greedy already! i didn't know my limits which is why i ended up with a terrible indigestion. shall not let that happen again. no more going to extremes!! :P (i try...)

anyway, we catered from PeraMakan, which is actually a Nyonya restaurant all the way at Keppel Club! we ate there before, and mummy really liked the dry mer siam from there (so do i!) and that's why we decided to cater from there ^^ it was really expensive though! and we totally over-ordered due to the minimum pax requirement. but it was absolutely worth it :D

despite the fact that we already had excess food, papa still asked me to make more stuff! :P but it was really fun, and i'm glad what i made was well-received by his guests ^^

the homemade sangria was AWESOME save for the fact that we didn't have brandy to put in. so i suppose the alcohol content was lower than what it should typically be? haha. anyway, it's really simple! just slice up fruits of your choice (i used apples, oranges, pineapples and peaches), put them in a container, and pour in the wine. i actually mixed different types of wine oops (Carbenet Sauvignon and Shiraz) because we didn't have enough of one kind to fill the container, but it turned out fine, luckily! (i'm seriously one of the most trial-and-error cooks around haha). brandy should be added too, but i didn't have it, so i left that out. leave it to chill for up to 24 hours, for the flavours of the alcohol and fruit to blend into each other! (:

and i also made a cheese platter!! this was the most last minute thing ever, with us going out to buy the ingredients just 2 hours before the guests arrived! but i'm so glad it turned out perfect! :) the best part was how the cheese board even came about - it came together with a purchase of certain types of cheeses! i'm a happy girl now because i've been wanting to buy a cheese board since FOREVER but never knew where i could get one! ^^ it was SO timely. i served brie cheese, cheddar cheese and pepper-spiced cream cheese, together with condiments like dried cranberries, ham, pecan nuts and crackers. simple, and oh-so-yummy :D

and the gorgeous table set-up was thanks to papa's friend who delivered a gift earlier in the day (: it came in super useful after i kinda unassembled the whole thing :P used the container to hold the sangria and the rest of the items inside for the table decor ;)

Carnivore Appetite

Part II of Sam's birthday (another very overdue post. see part I here!) was stuffing ourselves at the buffet at Carnivore Appetite! at $29.90 for a weekday dinner, this is quite a steal! though i would say that the meat could have been better, but for this price, i'd still say it was worth a try (:

salad bars are always one of my first stops at a buffet! LOVE all the colours here, and i really liked how they provided pretty interesting veggie varieties that aren't usually available in other salad bars e.g. alfalfa sprouts and beetroot! (not that i really like beetroot, but the colour is loveee)

the seafood section was pretty small, and i suggest skipping it because i felt it wasn't very fresh.

and here are the grilled options!! to be honest, the variety was a tad disappointing. while i didn't expect it to be as extensive as the original Carnivore restaurants, but having only four meats to choose from was rather sad :(

there were other cooked dishes as well, and we particularly liked the braised beef on the left! it was pretty tender and tasty :)

these were the cold dish options! didn't try them though.

birthday boy diggin' in :))) <3

oh! these were probably one of our most interesting discoveries!! two adorable bottles of condiments, which served a purpose that was more practical than expected. each containing special ingredients to counter excess salt or grease, all you have to do is drizzle some onto the meat and voila, it fits to your desired tolerance level ;)

YUMMMMM :)

and desserts! again a disappointing section with just ice cream and a bunch of cakes. i guess i can't complain because i didn't really expect there to be a dessert section in the first place! and we were already quite full by then anyway :)

overall, i feel that having reasonable expectations for this buffet helps! it is definitely one of the more affordable ones around (especially when compared to its predecessor), and this is reflected in the variety that you get. we were still VERY full at the end of the buffet though! so shows that you don't need that much food to stuff yourself with ;)

on a side note, i really wanna try Lady M!! does anyone have recommendations on what's good there? ^^
