Catalunya

Celebrated my birthday with the family with a meal at Catalunya! I've been wanting to check out this place ever since it opened around, what, 2 years ago? But of course it's not the kind of place we go to on any normal day. The ambience is stunning, with 360 degree panoramic views of Marina Bay thanks to full length windows around the entire restaurant. Service was pretty good too - we had to wait for our table to be ready as we arrived early, and they seated us at the bar area and served us water (warm water specially for my grandma) without us having to ask.

I've read quite a number of reviews on how Catalunya is over-priced. To a certain extent, yes, you are forking out quite a bit for the ambience and view. But then again, Spanish food is pretty expensive in general. The Traditional Suckling Pig ($135) from Catalunya is probably the most "reasonably-priced" item on the menu, in my opinion. Compared to the ½ pig we had at Serenity Spanish Bar & Restaurant that cost $168, this was definitely a better deal! But then again, all the other items at Serenity were more affordable.

I was initially a tad disappointed when I saw the pig. It definitely appears more like a piglet by the looks of it. But whoa, after we ate it, I was full to bursting by the end of it. Our waiter served the dish to us with true Spanish flair, chopping it up rapidly with a plate and flinging the plate to the ground in one fluid movement, shattering it to smithereens. The skin of the pig was satisfyingly crackly, and the meat was very tender too. While it looked small, it was massive to eat is definitely good for sharing.

It is unfortunate that Catalunya doesn't serve paellas for dinner. How could we eat Spanish food without having that signature dish?? :( Thankfully, in place of that, Catalunya has a dish that is close enough to satisfy all possible cravings of those who love the Spanish rice as much as I do! The Lobster Rice ($80) is a wetter version of our favourite paella. While there are no crispy bits at the bottom, the dish is not lacking in any way, with every grain of rice suffused with a delicious flavour. And who can say no to those lobster pincers balanced on top of the rice?

Why Spanish food is so expensive is because no one really wants to pay the same price for a few scraps of tapas, when you can get a full meal in another restaurant. Catalunya's tapas are really quite expensive, and they sure weren't enough to satisfy our starving selves at the start of the meal. (We needn't have ordered them actually, if we knew how filling the suckling pig & lobster rice would be!!)

I was really glad that I finally had the chance to try White Asparagus ($18) though! :) I've been hearing so much about it (it was one of my greatest regrets that I didn't buy it while it was in season when I was in Europe...), and it was really quite delicious! The texture is pretty different from that of green asparagus, and it was served simply - steamed, so that its natural flavours could shine through, and topped with blood orange sections and tarragon mayonnaise.

The Bikini ($20, a double portion is pictured above) was anything but skimpy, with two super crisp slices of toast (the bread they used was awesome!) sandwiching ham, gooey cheese and truffle. Sounds simple, but it packed a punch in terms of flavour, and we devoured it in seconds. Didn't help that it was so tiny :P Luckily we ordered two portions of it.

I think this was the Tortilla Del Trampo ($18) if I remember correctly. Eggy, fluffy, and topped with an interesting sauce. This was quite tasty, but didn't really stand out significantly.

Conclusion? Great for a one-off experience, but I probably wouldn't be back :P

Aaaand I have to showcase my birthday cake! ^^ This is such a poor picture of it though >.< But I really liked it!! I took a risk this time, ordering a cake from Maple and Market though I've never tried their cakes before, nor have I heard anything about it. Their bakes seemed really nice though! And since they organise baking classes, I figured the quality should be pretty good. I wasn't disappointed! :))) When I first saw my cake, I thought that it looked like a really fluffy sponge cake. When I cut into it though, I got the shock of my life. It was super dense. In a good way though! I absolutely loved it!!! I'm evidently in an adventurous mood this birthday, because I ordered a flavour that I wouldn't usually go for (not in my birthday cake!) - The Blossom ($34 for 6" cake) was a rose cake with raspberry cream cheese frosting and caramelised pistachios. And it was super yummy!!! I can't wait to go back to the cafe and try more flavours already ^^

Twenty-three

Another year older, another year wiser :)

This year is going to be one with so many changes - with graduation, starting work, and who knows what else? - and along with it, more experiences. This year's birthday was different, somewhat. I always make a big deal out of my own birthday, and god knows how difficult that makes things for Sam :P hahaha. I always unintentionally spoil his surprises, whoops! I'm also the one planning the entire celebration with the family (actually it's just food, haha cos I'm the foodie here right?) and I get to choose whatever I want to eat. Yay! (greedy me :P) It's never a birth-DAY for me, but rather a birth-WEEK. Hahaha.

This year I don't know whether it's just that I can't be bothered (growing old? :O) or maybe I've mellowed, but I didn't think much about my birthday coming up as I would usually do. I like to think it's the latter ;) Perhaps with stuff going on at home and everyone just getting settled into their jobs, I didn't really expect them to have time to celebrate my birthday with me. But they did :) And it was not so much of a "celebration" but more like just a get-together with everyone and it was great! :)) I guess when you haven't seen each other in what-seems-like ages, every gathering is a celebration in itself :) Just spending time with these people makes me feel so so lucky that I have them in my life <3

Met up with the hopers finally! Since the longest time. I chose this picture because Scott insists that it looks better (probably more like because he looks better, while I look huge because I'm in the front), but since he organised this dinner and we didn't get to celebrate his birthday, so shall give it to him ;) hehe. So many things going on that are so exciting!!! Liying's first day of work, me & Mel being future colleagues (yayyy!) and both Scott & Shan's exciting news ^^ Thanks so much for dinnering on a Thursday night when most of you have work the next day! :)

Biggest surprise of all was my "lunch with Sam" at Potato Head Folk! This was the surprise that I spoiled for him haha. And well, luckily I just conceded to go along with his plan (haha otherwise he'll get all stressed againnnn) even though I was almost ready to back out of lunch because it was so late already!!! Otherwise he'll have to drag me kicking and screaming to this place (haha kidding). And when we reached, I headed right to a two-person table before I looked ahead just slightly and got the hugest shock of my life!! :O AWW MAN :'))) Haha I couldn't stop blabbering with shock. These guys are the sweetest :)) Totally reminded me of how they surprised me at Marina Barrage like what, 3 years ago? Omg how time flies!!!! And look how far we've come since then :) THANK YOU SO MUCH <3<3<3 love y'all :') and if only Rachel was here! Just missing her to make this picture complete :) The decor of Potato Head Folk made such a great backdrop for this photo! Review will be up in a few days ^^

And YAYYYYY, they bought me exactly what I needed!! And the colour is too gorgeous. So ME. I love it! ^^ And whee I can finally get rid of my old ugly pair of slippers. Gotta thank Sam for his elaborate plan of helping to get me to the gathering and for the present idea! ;) *mwacksssss* thanks a million baby :')

Even the exterior of Potato Head Folk looks so nice!!! We just had to grab a random stranger and ask him to take a photo for us :p

Hee <3 And for the rest of that day, we enjoyed some really nice couple time, finally! :) This boy has been so busy with work. Which is not a bad thing, since it seems like he enjoys it! :)) Really glad that it turned out well for him <3 But also, really enjoy the times when he can put his work aside and we can have a dateeeee! We spent most of the day lazing around and chatting actually, since we hadn't had the chance to sit around and talk for the longest time! And we had dinner at Jamie's Italian ^^ One year after this place opened in Singapore, I was so excited to try it!!! I dined there last year when I was in York too :) And being so greedy as usual, I ordered quite a lot of food :P Sorry for the bad photos - I don't think you can actually see how they really look like, sigh. The lighting was just too dim. But the food was pretty good! Hehe luckily I did all my research before, and knew what to order. Their menu changes quite a bit though, so some stuff I wanted wasn't available.

Jamie's Walnut Salad ($9.50)
This looks like an absolute mess! :'( I'm really sad okay. I couldn't even save these pictures with iPhoto. I ordered this salad because of how pretty and colourful it looked in a photo, but sigh, can't see anything here. You can take a look at the photo here instead. For $9.50, this portion of salad was tiny. It was really really little!!! And I could barely find any walnuts in it?! While it was tasty, especially with the aged balsamic dressing, I felt that it really wasn't any value for money. Thankfully, all the other dishes were really generously portioned.

I've heard nothing but praise for the 30-day matured prime rib, but that was just too expensive for us. Instead, Sam opted for the 220g Rump Steak ($28.50), and it turned out to be pretty good too! It was a really juicy and flavourful slab marinated in its own juices - and was that a hint of red wine I tasted?  Albeit a tad tough (perhaps because it was on the skinny side), the taste fully made up for it.

I went for the really sinful-sounding Jamie's Italian Signature Porchetta ($35). Think slow cooked pork belly that was delightfully tender, filled with a stuffing made of herbs, garlic and spices. I loved how well cooked the pork belly was (so so soft), and the cacophony of flavours that the stuffing lent to it. Halfway into the dish, I found it a bit too flavourful though, especially with the equally savoury fennel crackling on the side. Perhaps more pork and less stuffing would have been a better balance.

It was hilarious how Sam & I had the exact same reservations about ordering Jool's Favourite Sicilian Tuna Fusilli ($14/$21) because of our bad experience of pasta in Sicily :P This dish came highly recommended in all the reviews I read though! And we were really pleasantly surprised by it! The spicy tuna sauce was a refreshing contrast from the meaty main courses we'd ordered and helped to cleanse our palate in between dishes. We ordered the tasting portion and felt that it was quite a lot already!

Although we were already like 90% full by the end of all that food, I still went ahead and got dessert :P After hearing so much about the Epic Brownie ($11.50), I simply couldn't resist! And it certainly lived up to expectations :D  A warm, fudge brownie - this was so sinful and so good. Can't imagine eating it alone though. And I could have done without the almond ice cream. Yucky. But then again, I'm just biased. I would still order the brownie again if I come back.

Despite the fact that this restaurant has been in town for a year, Jamie Oliver's reputation obviously has kept its popularity on high. The restaurant was packed when we were there and I doubt there is any room for walk-ins. Reservations should be made a couple of weeks in advance!

Feeling blessed :')

initially wanted to put all my birthday celebrations with friends in a single post, but i decided that each of them deserves their own! ^^ feeling super blessed after all the celebrations and i'm so thankful to have met all these wonderful people in university :')

so glad to have full attendance (almost, missing ngan xP) for our gathering this time!! first time since we got back ^^ and so super duper happy to see everyone, and touched that they could all turn up! <3 hehe started with a round of spanish cava ;) #shiok. we actually wanted to go to wine connection but it was full!! everywhere in robertson quay was full on a friday evening obviously, but luckily we went early and managed to score a huge table at Barraka, a spanish tapas bar.

the early birds ^^^

they surprised me with a birthday cake! :))) haha so sweet of them! it was like almost a week after my actual birthday already. big thanks to my sweet darling who went to buy the cake and made sure there was even a lighter to light the candle :') everything was PERFECT <3 thanks baby!!! :*)

couldn't stop beaming the ENTIRE evening :") haha really super happy that day!!!

got some ion orchard vouchers for my present! :)) omg i am seriously wondering how they knew i was browsing around VS that day :O haha. and scott bought me a bottle of ice wine as well!!! so excited to try it ^^

toasted to sangria too! ^^ haha this sangria was a bit strange though. it was a sparkling sangria, that looked and tasted more like orange juice.

the girls! :)))) <3<3<3 so sweet, love them to bits!

and everyone who was there! ^^ a group which is always growing bigger and tighter <3 (:

More birthday celebrations! (:

haha i have to say that i actually enjoy celebrating my birthday with different groups of people, rather than the humongous 21st birthday bash i had last year. don't get me wrong, it's not that i didn't enjoy it! i really loved the planning part and preparing for it. it was the first time i really organized an event from scratch and i'm super proud of it hehe. it's just that there were so many people and i felt like i was totally spaced out, not really knowing who to entertain and all. feel kinda bad that i barely managed to talk to a lot of people. instead, on my other birthdays, i'm really glad to be able to spend quality time with the people who are important to me, in smaller groups! (: more intimate, better interaction and prolonged celebration mwahahahaha ;)

soooo met up with the girls, sk & rach one day after my birthday for dinner! (: so sweet these two girls ^^ really appreciate them taking time out to celebrate my birthday with me!

love this photo of us! we were on the super long escalator in ION and immediately whipped out the camera for a photo-op lol!! haha this is what happens when there are no guys around to complain/laugh at how ridiculous we are being ;)

had dinner at &made! (: the review will be up in...erm a few months time haha because i've got too many backlogged posts alr >.< i'm sorry!!

and they got me fairy lights as a present!!!! awwwww :") haha somehow they always know what to get for me for my birthday! ^^ i loved it!!! perfect for decorating my room when it's ready! :D can't wait! ;)

and jiayee is back!!!! (: sashimi date with everyone on monday xx

22nd (:

another year older, another year wiser. haha i do think that i have grown quite a bit in the last year! learning about myself, learning about relationships, seeing the world on exchange and realising there are so many more beautiful places to visit! my bucket list just grew even longer hehe. and can't believe i'm going to graduate in a year :O insane!!! i don't want to :( feel totally unprepared for working life. really going to enjoy my last year of school and hopefully, in the process, find out what i really want to do (: YOLO!!

so anyway, spent my birthday weekend with the most impt people :') so thankful to have them in my life <3 my family & my sweet darling :*)

i received the most gorgeous bouquet of roses in the morning that kept me smiling whenever i saw them ^^ took tonnes of photos of them later in the night when i reached home as well hehe.

so beautiful right!! :') love how this photo turned out. it captured the colours so well! this must totally be a bouquet characteristic of the two of us - so colourful!! :D and i realised how much i love baby's breath! it's just an accompaniment, but it's so soft to the touch and it was just quite fun to keep rubbing it between my fingers (haha i'm damn lame).

we went cafe-hopping (kinda) that day! in the east, because we were going to sing K too ^^ hehe had so much fun singing together! :) our first time ;) not bad for a first haha! this was the boy's breakfast at penny university! I LOVED IT. haha could have koped the entire thing :P lol! esp since my food took so long to come...

after K, we headed to rabbit carrot gun for lunch (for him) / tea (for me) haha. and i got a lemon drizzle cake (which was super yummyyyyy) which became my impromptu birthday cake with an iPhone candle! ;) hahahaha. so creative right ;)

aaaand last pic to end the night! ^^ thanks baby, for everything :) i love you <3<3<3

on sunday, my actual birthday, had a food fest with the family! :D nom nom noms. happy tummy! it's been totally indulged this week haha. brunch at Open Door Policy (actually we ordered from their lunch menu) and i have to say that it has become a favourite on my foodie list!!!! i'm so glad that i finally tried this place! been wanting to come here since FOREVER. and i'm so glad i finally got to try it on my birthday (:

and we went to W Singapore for dinner!!!!!!!! :D *squeals*!!!!!! i've been wanting to go there since it opened (wish i could have a staycation thereeee) and my birthday was the perfect excuse to drag the family there hehe :P only can make such requests on my special day LOL. o.m.g. this hotel is simply gorgeous and the service is amazing too - from the moment we stepped out of the car! love it. i'm gonna do a proper post on it! (: and also for the rest of the food places. stay tuned ;)

started camwhoring around the hotel because the scenery was just too pretty! (:

we had dinner at Skirt! (: heard a lot about this place since the hotel opened and i really wanted to try it! esp since they were supposed to have affordable steaks. sounds good!!! mm i wouldn't say that it's affordable...but at least not exorbitant haha. i think they already increased prices since last time because the prices i saw on the menu were different from what i read in reviews! anyway, we had a pretty good experience here (:

and i got my lovely cake from Antoinette! :))) it's the Antoinette cake ;) it was sooooo yummy!!! after trying the mini version in the restaurant previously, this came to mind again when i was searching for my birthday cake. and i'm so proud of my choice! ;) it was absolutely delicious. soft earl grey mousse set atop a crunchy biscuit/pistachio base. and with little jam balls on top! hehe so cute. i loved this cake! we all did. it was so delicious!!! until we had to struggle to finish it amongst the five of us hahaha. but it was yummy anyway :)

thanks papa & mummy for always bringing me to such nice places to eat (: it's always a joy spending time with the people i love on my birthday <3 i feel so blessed ^^ here's to another great year ahead! (:

21st Party

hihi! :) i had so much fun preparing for my birthday, and just wanna share with you what i did for it! and BIG THANKS to all those who helped me in one way or another :) <3
okie, maybe i'll start from how i started planning my party. (I LOVE PLANNING EVENTS BTW!!! from helping to organize so many events, this is the first time i actually really started planning the entire thing from scratch, and actually carrying it out) #shagttm, but really fun :) i enjoyed the planning and preparing a lot :) haha

so anyway, once i confirmed the date and venue (i took forever just to decide these basics, and before this was done, i couldnt actually begin any preparations, although i had already come up with my theme :D), i could start ordering the stuff i needed. luckily i had pretty much already done my research before that, so it wasn't too difficult. oh oh, my theme was FLEURS DE PARIS :))) haha i think it just sounds so nice :D anyway, it's french for 'flowers of paris', so my theme revolved around both flowers and paris (of course right..). everyone was supposed to come dressed in flowers! i'm glad to say that i think almost all the girls did! :D yayyyy :) guys were disappointing -.- only scott came in a flower shirt! haha my awesome bro who was so supportive (:

okay on to the deco & food etc! :D

guestbook for my party was done entirely by my sis! super duper pretty :D i remember i was squealing at every page when she showed it to me. bought materials mostly from papermarket, and also other random places like spotlight, daiso & popular bookstore, to create the guestbook :)

i ordered balloons from this shop at rochor centre called Yeo GM Trading. can check out their website here. this was quite reasonably priced since i wanted to get helium balloons, which are usually >$1 each! they have different packages, and the one i got included 60 helium balloons (you can choose the colours) + a balloon bouquet (two pattern balloons + 5 normal helium balloons) for $80, which is really quite affordable! and it includes transportation too! i got pink and gold balloons (i realised my whole theme ended up being really pink haha but i loved it!) to suit my theme :)

the most tedious part of my birthday prep was probably doing this backdrop for my photo area. oh i bought an eiffel tower  wall sticker (you can probably see it in my previous birthday post with all the pics) from a small shop at junction 8 for $16 to bring out the 'paris' side of my theme. anyway, back to the backdrop. i totally did SO MUCH research to finally get the materials for this! went around to daiso, spotlight and artfriend to check out prices and the resources i needed for this. i bought the corkboard from artfriend (i think it was around $16-$18) for this size, which was the largest (and MEGA HEAVY esp since i had to carry it around for so long... -.-). flowers were from daiso, cos they were cheap. end up i bought way more than enough flowers (i got those flower wreaths and cut them up to get the loose flowers), and since there were excess flowers, i cut up the petals to make them look like rose petals and scattered them around haha. and i spent forever deciding how to do the letters. initially i was thinking of getting wooden/styrofoam letters, but decided against it cos they were so ridiculously expensive D: end up i had to do paper mache all on my own!!! :O a completely lack-of-artistic/creative-talent had to do this :/ haha i swear i had to do so many things which i would hate to do, just for this board. OCD-me had to touch glue!!!! and smear it all over the alphabets to get the glitter effect. yucks. haha anyway, how i did the letters was paper mache, spray on black paint, and smear glue and glitter on it. big thanks to my two sisters and sam who were chionging it with me the night before my party :)

for door gifts, i decided to give out polaroids with a little thankyou sticker on it :) i designed the sticker using iWork Pages (you can use MS word or any other software really). and i printed it at this shop called Ben Quick at Sunshine Plaza #01-08/63. it was just $2 for an A4 page! :) super affordable. and really fast, you can collect it on the spot. all good, except that the stupid auntie cheated me cos she printed on some art card at first, when i told her i wanted a sticker -.- wth. and she made me pay for it. haiz, at least i complained and she let me split half with her, so it was just $1 but still -.- damn retarded.

AAAAAAAAND, being a gourmie, of course the food at my party had to be awesome! :D hehe. this was the best part of my party really! it was the highlight, and the most fun part of my preparation :D as in the research part. haha i didnt do any of this :P but i had awesome people to do it for me! :)
i can't believe no one took pictures of my buffet??!!??!! okay fine, it didnt look as nice as my dessert bar (look above, aren't you just drooling already? :D), but i think it was tasty! :) after checking out LOTS of caterers out there, i decided on Four Seasons, which is affordable, and the quality is good! i got their $8/pax tea reception, minimum number of pax is 40, and it includes 8 dishes + 1 drink. what i liked about four seasons is that they have a lot of dishes for you to choose from, and there are no restrictions on the number of carbo dishes you want to have. so i could order two types of main courses (yang chow fried fried rice and sin chow bee hoon), assorted sandwiches, chicken franks w BBQ sauce, scallop nuggets, fried honey prawn dumpling, sambal fish ball and honey glazed drumlet. for drinks i ordered lemon tea. because my venue was actually not supposed to have a party (oops :P this is why i can't tell you where i held it), i requested for entirely disposable containers and no table setup, as well as packet drinks (instead of the dispenser, and the metal trays with warmers). thankfully, the caterer acceded to my request so it was all good :)

for my beautiful dessert bar, it was super big thanks to Super Desserts Market!!!! :) my dessert bar was more expensive than my buffet dinner, but it was totally worth it. almost everything was polished off! i negotiated for $400 for 30pax, and this included 5 desserts: mini macarons, mini cupcakes, mini cheesecakes, decorated cookies and marshmallow pops. the price of the dessert bar includes delivery, setup and collection, and also customization to suit the theme! :) really big thanks to fiona & her team who were so sweet in doing all this :D it was super duper pretty! check out the eiffel tower cookies and the little sign they did for the dessert bar. loved all the pretty stands and everything!

apparently SDM is going to be shifting their operations though :( so not sure whether they'll be doing this anymore! instead, they have progressed into a new cafe initiative, Cups N Canvas (139 Selegie Road), so do check them out there! :)

and for the icing to top it off, my gorgeous birthday cake! :D it looked so beautiful amidst my dessert bar! :) unfortunately by then half the desserts were gone (quite annoyed about that - it was because the cake people took FOREVER to deliver my cake such i was panicking halfway through my birthday party wondering whether the cake would arrive or not! i was trying to save the cupcake tower just in case i didnt have a birthday cake, then i would have to use the cupcakes as my cake >.< i was so worried!!!), but the cake was still nice anyway! i negotiated for quite a long time with them, and finally settled on a price of $350 for a three-layer cake (with the top two layers being real cake and the bottommost layer is fake). they have quite a number of flavours of cake to choose from! and i could get diff flavours for the different tiers :D so it was chocolate brownie for the top and dark chocolate ganache for the second layer. YUMMMMMMMMMY :D i'm so glad that my cake tasted as good as it looked! :) oh yeah! i forgot the most important part - haha it's from Haus of Patisserie! :) i think this was probably one of the most affordable of the customized cakes i checked out. the lady was really patient at answering all my enquiries at the start, which was good! haha i think i really had quite a lot of things to check out, and it was nice that she replied quite promptly with all the info/advice i required. unfortunately, after i made my deposit, the service went WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY downhill from there! they totally didnt acknowledge my payment, and i had to ask them a couple of times before they finally replied me. and subsequent emails after that went unanswered. on the day of my party, they were SUPER late and uncontactable, which totally made me panic :( hmph. i dunno whether i'll ever go back to them (not that i need another customized cake anytime soon haha!) but i guess at least i got a nice cake.

okie this is such a long and wordy post! haha but hope it was useful and you had fun reading it! till my next event... :D

I'm twenty-one! :O

omg i feel so old :P haha. for once, i actually had a big celebration on the actual day of my birthday itself. okay, last year i did have something like that too :P but usually i prefer my actual birthday to be celebrated with just my family, and have other celebrations with friends etc, on other days. haha party to prolong the celebration :P lol! this year, it was just bang-boom-pow all done in one day. except my celebration with sam the week before :)) and actually, while i've been wanting to have a birthday party for YEARS, i realised that my small celebration was wayyy sweeter and nicer and cosier than the big one. it was a fun experience! but probably not a good idea to have it on the actual day. i didnt really get to enjoy myself much with all the running around, and actually felt kinda bad that i couldnt spend time properly with any one group of friends :/ but anyway! i'm so glad that the party was a success! :)
here are the picturessss :D from my awesome photographer rach :D
