Catalunya

Celebrated my birthday with the family with a meal at Catalunya! I've been wanting to check out this place ever since it opened around, what, 2 years ago? But of course it's not the kind of place we go to on any normal day. The ambience is stunning, with 360 degree panoramic views of Marina Bay thanks to full length windows around the entire restaurant. Service was pretty good too - we had to wait for our table to be ready as we arrived early, and they seated us at the bar area and served us water (warm water specially for my grandma) without us having to ask.

I've read quite a number of reviews on how Catalunya is over-priced. To a certain extent, yes, you are forking out quite a bit for the ambience and view. But then again, Spanish food is pretty expensive in general. The Traditional Suckling Pig ($135) from Catalunya is probably the most "reasonably-priced" item on the menu, in my opinion. Compared to the ½ pig we had at Serenity Spanish Bar & Restaurant that cost $168, this was definitely a better deal! But then again, all the other items at Serenity were more affordable.

I was initially a tad disappointed when I saw the pig. It definitely appears more like a piglet by the looks of it. But whoa, after we ate it, I was full to bursting by the end of it. Our waiter served the dish to us with true Spanish flair, chopping it up rapidly with a plate and flinging the plate to the ground in one fluid movement, shattering it to smithereens. The skin of the pig was satisfyingly crackly, and the meat was very tender too. While it looked small, it was massive to eat is definitely good for sharing.

It is unfortunate that Catalunya doesn't serve paellas for dinner. How could we eat Spanish food without having that signature dish?? :( Thankfully, in place of that, Catalunya has a dish that is close enough to satisfy all possible cravings of those who love the Spanish rice as much as I do! The Lobster Rice ($80) is a wetter version of our favourite paella. While there are no crispy bits at the bottom, the dish is not lacking in any way, with every grain of rice suffused with a delicious flavour. And who can say no to those lobster pincers balanced on top of the rice?

Why Spanish food is so expensive is because no one really wants to pay the same price for a few scraps of tapas, when you can get a full meal in another restaurant. Catalunya's tapas are really quite expensive, and they sure weren't enough to satisfy our starving selves at the start of the meal. (We needn't have ordered them actually, if we knew how filling the suckling pig & lobster rice would be!!)

I was really glad that I finally had the chance to try White Asparagus ($18) though! :) I've been hearing so much about it (it was one of my greatest regrets that I didn't buy it while it was in season when I was in Europe...), and it was really quite delicious! The texture is pretty different from that of green asparagus, and it was served simply - steamed, so that its natural flavours could shine through, and topped with blood orange sections and tarragon mayonnaise.

The Bikini ($20, a double portion is pictured above) was anything but skimpy, with two super crisp slices of toast (the bread they used was awesome!) sandwiching ham, gooey cheese and truffle. Sounds simple, but it packed a punch in terms of flavour, and we devoured it in seconds. Didn't help that it was so tiny :P Luckily we ordered two portions of it.

I think this was the Tortilla Del Trampo ($18) if I remember correctly. Eggy, fluffy, and topped with an interesting sauce. This was quite tasty, but didn't really stand out significantly.

Conclusion? Great for a one-off experience, but I probably wouldn't be back :P

Aaaand I have to showcase my birthday cake! ^^ This is such a poor picture of it though >.< But I really liked it!! I took a risk this time, ordering a cake from Maple and Market though I've never tried their cakes before, nor have I heard anything about it. Their bakes seemed really nice though! And since they organise baking classes, I figured the quality should be pretty good. I wasn't disappointed! :))) When I first saw my cake, I thought that it looked like a really fluffy sponge cake. When I cut into it though, I got the shock of my life. It was super dense. In a good way though! I absolutely loved it!!! I'm evidently in an adventurous mood this birthday, because I ordered a flavour that I wouldn't usually go for (not in my birthday cake!) - The Blossom ($34 for 6" cake) was a rose cake with raspberry cream cheese frosting and caramelised pistachios. And it was super yummy!!! I can't wait to go back to the cafe and try more flavours already ^^

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar

happy mid-week everyone! (: It's also the middle of the semester and i'm completely drowned by school. don't ask me why i can be writing a post at this time. even though it's the midterm break, but that is just a complete misnomer! i just need some chocolate to release some endorphins into my system, and i hope this makes you salivate ;)

i've been wanting to visit Max Brenner for the longest time, and i'm sure all you like-minded chocolate fans out there would want to too! it's quite pricey though, which was why i was so excited to know that it was one of the participating restaurants in Esplanade's Visa one-for-one lunch promotions. unfortunately the promotion is over already, but i'm really glad i had the chance to try it. I've seen and heard so much about Max Brenner's chocolate fondue, and i just had to order it! the Classic European Chocolate Fondue for two people ($25.90) gives you a choice of two chocolate sauces - pure milk, dark or white - with toffee sauce, and is served with bananas, strawberries, chocolate chunk cookies, marshmallows and fluffy chocolate sponge cake for dipping. naturally, i went for the dark chocolate, and i decided to go with the milk chocolate for my second choice since i'm not such a fan of white chocolate anymore. in fact, i found the toffee too sweet. i wonder whether they would allow three pots of dark chocolate instead of one pot of each variety? :p i loved it. the dark chocolate was the perfect blend of bitter-sweetness, and it complemented the sweet condiments just right. i was a fan of the chocolate chip cookies and sponge cake especially. but while i had gone to Max Brenner with the sole purpose of trying their chocolate fondue, i found that i liked their waffles way more! not that there was anything wrong with the fondue, i just found the portion a little small (it's a tasting portion) and not all the condiments were to my liking.

since it was 1-for-1, we ordered two waffles ($18.90 each). my absolute favourite was the Tutti Frutti Waffle, whose name didn't appeal to me much initially, and therefore turned out to be a really pleasant surprise. the waffles at Max Brenner are really good! thick, fluffy waffles topped with a mountain of goodies that looked like a mouth-watering piece of art. the Tutti Frutti came with a generous amount of strawberries (what an overdose of strawberries that day! not that i'm complaining), blueberries and milk chocolate ganache. i loved the little bits of crumbles which lent additional texture to the dessert, and this all went together seamlessly with the smooth vanilla ice cream on the side.

the apple pie cinnamon waffle was delicious as well! though not as much as the former, because i felt it was a tad too sweet. chunks of white chocolate, apple slices, candied pecans (love!!), more crumbles and drizzled with a generous dollop of cinnamon-y sauce and with more vanilla ice cream. another classic combination that cannot go wrong!

Happy Birthday Scott!

i ate the most MASSIVE CHOCOLATE CAKE in my life when we celebrated scott's birthday haha.

my photo angle is really quite lousy so you probably can't imagine how big this cake was! but it's about 2 or 3 times the height of a normal cake!!!! now that's HUGE. and it comes with a pretty hefty price tag as well haha. a whole Au Chocolat cake costs more than $100 and a slice will set you back $18 :O gosh, i could buy a meal with that O.o but it's worth it ;) (definitely more so than those puny cakes which were 1/5 of this size and cost nearly $10 -.-). haha anyway this is really the mother of all cakes, and i think 8 people can probably share it :P among the four of us (three of whom were girls, and the birthday guy had a sore throat), we literally struggled to finish this. but it was too good to be wasted!!! layers of dense brownie-like cake, interspersed with layers of chocolate mousse and chocolate sauce to drizzle over. this is the ultimate chocolate cake ;) can't get it elsewhere and definitely worth your calories!!!!!

i seriously overate that day >.< because we were so hungry waiting for shan to come after work, we decided to order the truffle fries ($15). and they forgot our order -.- i was really getting quite angsty smelling the intoxicating aroma all around, as they brought out at least 3 servings of truffle fries, but not for us -.- ugh. the smell was totally drool-worth though. definitely the best smelling truffle fries ever. unfortunately, that created expectations that were completely dashed when the fries arrived :"( these were by far one of the most pathetic truffle fries i've ever tasted....out of that whole basket, only 2 pieces i ate actually had the taste of truffle, and everything else was just like your average fries. sighs.

my previous experience at Au Chocolat was way better! read about it here (: i'm so sorry i deleted all the photos of it accidentally though :( anyway, remember to try the chocolate cake!!!! :D

Chez Petit Salut

Chez Petit Salut is tucked away in Tower 3 of Marina Bay Financial Centre, and it could be easy to miss if you’re not looking out for it. But chancing upon this restaurant is like uncovering a hidden gem – slightly unpolished, but with an unmistakably unique allure that draws you into its comfort gently.

For something light to whet your appetite, try the pan seared Hokkaido scallops. It comes highly recommended by the staff, and we concur. Delightfully fresh and bouncy, the scallops are paired with a lovely pumpkin puree that is smooth and flavourful, and you will notice how the contrast in textures – creamy puree and springy meat – makes for a well-rounded dish.

How can you miss out on foie gras at a French restaurant? Chez Petit Salut does theirs completely sinfully, with unabashed pride. The liver comes in a thick slab, lusciously rich, with the fats oozing out and melting in your mouth. This is balanced out by the green apples and strawberries, which provide a refreshing spin on the dish to cleanse your palate in between mouthfuls of the meaty goodness. We also love how the maple syrup reduction adds a touch of concentrated sweetness to the dish.

Chez Petit Salut does its soups beautifully. The lobster bisque is made from roasted crustaceans, boiled till they form an emulsion seen atop the soup. The froth hints at the lightness of this soup, and it has a little surprise inside, in the form of a piece of ravioli. Encasing a blend of mixed vegetables, including carrots and celery among others, it is a thoughtful addition that makes this soup all the more interesting.

The French onion soup is a delicious French classic – the chicken stock is super appetizing, and with the rustic flavours of the cheese and croutons, this is a homely dish that you wouldn’t want to miss out on.

For the mains, we suggest you try the oven roasted French quail stuffed with wild mushrooms, and guess what, more foie gras. The meat of the quail is so tender it falls away easily with a fork. It is served atop a fragrant veal jus, which further brings out the essence of the bird, and comes with mashed potato on the side, which you will absolutely adore. Smooth, creamy, with a slightly buttery taste, the mashed potato is a winner.

You could also try the pan roasted beef tenderloin with caramelized white peppercorn crust. The beef is grain-fed, cultivated till it is wonderfully tender, and the peppercorn on top is surprisingly delectable! Fiery, savoury and crusty all at once. Have the beef au natural, or pair it with some mustard for an additional kick.

With the range of options for dessert, you absolutely have to leave some space for it! Try the choux buns, which are a lovely combination of warm chocolate sauce and cold vanilla ice cream encased in a fluffy pastry.

Or the pear ‘tarte tatin’, which is a delight with its feathery crust, and sweet juicy fruit.

Another option is the passion fruit soufflé, which we love for its pillowy, light-as-air texture.

finished my internship at DBS ^^ totally enjoyed myself being there for the past two months. it was such an amazing experience working there. i didnt expect to have such a great experience after the internship, but it was! i learned so much, and met such wonderful people :') it really showed me how important it is to have friendly colleagues and supportive bosses in the workplace. makes working so much more enjoyable! and the fact that our office is located at the marina bay is a plus of course, since i get to walk past my favourite place every single day. i swear the view of the bay and breeze just invigorates me every morning when it's a drag to wake up before 7am. the morning thing is still a pain though :/ and the place is super ulu -.- but i met really amazing people there, and i would definitely go back to visit! :) prepared all these pretty things in the picture on my last day for everyone ^^ it's really quite a joy making people happy i realised :) and it was such a bittersweet feeling leaving :') happy for freedom, but i'm really gonna miss the people!

went on a sashimi craze with sam on monday ^^ the couple of weeks right before exchange, i was totally focused on eating asian food as much as possible. i'm so gonna miss chinese food in europe :((( anyway, if you don't know, Standing Sushi Bar has the most amazing sashimi deal on monday - $3 for a plate of 5 pcs of salmon sashimi!!!! where else can you get that?! :O and sake goes for $1. so awesome! ^^ i ordered nothing but plates and plates of sashimi, plus one tiny piece of sushi for $2.50 (which was totally not really worth it considering how cheap the sashimi was) just for some rice. i'm not a huge fan of sake, but ordered it anyway, since it was so affordable as well! reservations are recommended on mondays since this is such a popular deal!

Au Chocolat

this is a super pretty place! i was first attracted to it by their Gelato Frenzy - a whopping 24 scoops of ice cream fo $99.90! it's meant for a party of 6-10pax and just sounds awesomely wonderful :D i'm melting!
but we didnt eat that of course. haha have to find a huge group of people for that xP but i would LOVE to try it someday.

well the name of this place already suggests what its specialty could be, and we definitely could wait to give their chocolates a shot ;) the Au Chocolat hot fudge ($9) is a deliciously rich, luscious cup of thick chocolate that runs down your throat smoothly with each mouthful. you'll have to resist gulping down the whole cup at one go! or maybe, just order another one ;)

au chocolat has an all-day breakfast in which almost every single dish sounds so tempting!! it's really quite difficult to choose :P i loved the sausage and mushroom quiche ($18) for its crisp pastry and piping hot interior, which was so tasty!

the beignets ($15) are these adorable mini donuts, fresh and warm, dusted with sugar and drizzled with au chocolat fudge sauce. ooh sounds so sinful and saccharinely sweet ;) if you like a sweet breakkie, this is definitely for you!

the veggie ($18) is a super healthy-sounding omelette with tomatoes, avocados, red onions and mushrooms folded into it. pretty amazing how the flavours all blended in really well with each other! :)

the aebelskivers ($16) was another sweet breakfast dish which i absolutely loved!!!!! wow, i really have to rave about this one :D danish pancake pockets that were fried to a crisp, with a slightly breaded exterior, filled with crunchy Granny smith apples compote infused with cinnamon. absolutely delightful - you have got to try this!!

and as always, the ever-boring me (haha :P) with my eggs benedict again! the au chocolat benedict ($18) is special though! instead of the usual hollandaise, au chocolat does its own variation infused with red wine and chocolate! :O now doesnt that sound decadent! together with the yummy poached eggs, with a the perfect runny consistency when pricked, bacon, spinach, tomatoes atop an english muffin, this is one wholesome breakfast ;)

Akari Japanese Dining & Bar

Situated at the spanking new Marina Bay Financial Centre, Akari offers a refreshing menu of traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine that caters to the most exquisite palates at very reasonable prices.  With an impressive executive lunch and Omakase course, and a spacious private dining room, Akari is the perfect place for a business lunch or company party, especially with its accessible location.  As with an authentically Japanese experience, the service was impeccable from the moment we stepped into the restaurant.

Start off your meal with a glass of sparkling sake to whet your appetite. A modern take on the traditional sake, this was a drink created from the influence of Westerners in Japan who infused a delightful fizz into this Japanese alcoholic drink. Enjoyed by all generations, this is a trend that is rapidly gaining popularity in Japan. Lightly sweet, with an ever-so-slight alcoholic flavour, this drink won us over with its subtly refreshing nature. Alternatively, you could try their draft beers during Akari’s happy hour from Monday to Saturday.

What’s a Japanese meal without seafood? The Salmon Zukushi ($28) platter consisted of salmon, salmon belly and salmon roe. We especially loved the salmon belly, so tender and smooth that it simply slithered down our throats. The oyster ($12 for two), which was a special off-the-menu dish highly recommended by the staff, completely blew us over. Pan-fried in its own juices, it was succulent and slightly crispy, and glided into our mouths with the freshness of a crystalline rock pool.

To prepare ourselves for the onslaught of meat dishes, we cleansed our palate with the Negitoro Avocado Nama Harumaki ($28) – an astoundingly healthy dish, and yet absolutely delicious. A stunning visual masterpiece, we were enraptured by the arrangement of the leafy vegetables amidst the rice paper rolls. Delicately thin rice paper encased chopped tuna belly, so fine that it dissolved in our mouths, and diced avocado, whose muted taste complemented the fish perfectly. Creamy wasabi mayonnaise generously drizzled over the rice rolls provided an invigorating zing to round off this healthy salad.

The Nagaimo Somen ($6.50) was another super healthy, and eye-candy worthy appetizer that we thoroughly enjoyed. Fresh shredded noodle-style crunchy mountain yams in an adorable cocktail glass served with a sour plum-flavoured fish stock. This was a super light and refreshing dish that was proclaimed to be one of the healthiest by our server.

We were completely raving over the Soki Tatsuta Age ($26), which was a deep-fried simmered pork bone that had been boiled overnight till the cartilage was reduced to a smooth puree instead of the crunchy bone you would expect. This exemplifies the chef’s thoroughness in the execution of his dishes, where every slice of meat was fried to a crisp on the outside, yet retaining the tender moist texture within.

The Gindara Saikyo Yaki ($26) was my absolute FAVOURITE DISH ever!! Grilled cod marinated in sweet miso sauce for hours such that the flavours of the sauce were completely suffused in the fish made it so irresistibly delicious! The meat of the fish was firm, yet tender – a perfect dish in itself :)

With all this food, you would no doubt feel satiated at the end of your meal. But for a sweet touch, try the cheese cake ($7.50). A wobbly tofu cheesecake that balances precariously on a crunchy biscuit base, this sealed the deal for us to provide a closure for our meal.

Axis Bar and Lounge

Inconspicuously tucked away at the side, away from the attractions that are Mortons Steakhouse and Melt the world café, is Axis Bar and Lounge. Chill-out with the gorgeous view of the Marina Bay area right in front of you. MY HAPPY PLACE! :D I could spend the whole day there. Unfortunately that day I went, the windows were misty -.- I couldn’t see the view at all, such a pity.

Anyway, the drinks are good, and the bar snacks were simply awesome!

This has to be the most interesting accompaniment to my drink ever. Wasabi chips which packed a real punch – they were kick-ass spicy! I popped one into my mouth, and the zing just totally woke me up! Good if you’re starting to get intoxicated on the alcohol, this is perfect to prepare you for more drinks to come.

I ordered the stately romance cocktail ($24), which was earl grey infused gin with lychee puree, rose syrup and fresh lemon. I couldn’t really appreciate the earl grey, which was what struck me for every mouthful I took. But I like how it mellowed down to a gentle aftertaste with the rose and lychee flavours. it's such a prettily girly drink! :)

Mummy ordered the ginger mojito ($24). She felt that it wasn’t gingery enough, but I thought it was! It had the spiciness of old ginger. Not really my type.

Yi had the chocolate sin martini ($20) which was similar to that at mortons! Absolut vanilla, with crème de cacao white & brown and chocolate syrup. A decadent, smooth drink that could beat a dessert hands down!

Yomenya Goemon

ooh marina bay link mall is a really fun place to be at!! just think, its RIGHT BELOW the marina bay sands area which is totally my happy place :)) haha i dunno why either. i just feel SUPER duper happy whenever i see that whole spacious area :) ahh :) so niceeee. happy happy :)

haha anyways, there are quite a few food places there which i've been wanting to check out! finally went there to eat :) after going to the regular places around school all the time, like somerset, dhoby gaut, city hall (omg a million times already...), we finally ventured a little further to raffles place! :) and there are so many hidden gems there, it's such a pity to not go there! we kinda chose the wrong time though! we went during lunch hour and OMG, the place was flooded with people! we totally forgot to take that into account.

you'll be immediately attracted by yomenya goemon by the colourful display of their pastas! you might just miss it if you rush up the escalator cos it's right at the corner, but hey, good things shouldnt be bypassed just like that! haha. this place specialises in japanese spaghetti! when we went there, they had various lunch sets starting from $13.50 (if i remember correctly), which includes your choice of spaghetti, access to the salad bar and a bowl of soup.
i ordered the vongole rosso - tomato sauce. haha so rare to order a seafood pasta right. but i figured it'll be the most worth it :P haha auntie-syndrome omg. and it turned out to be a good choice! :) the noodles were cooked nicely al dente, and there was a rather generous quantity of fresh clams to enjoy.

debbie's dish was similar to mine! except that her's was seafood, so there were mussels and prawns in addition to the clams. yumyum :)

and i loved the salad bar!!!!! :D :D hehe. it was so fun to pile my bowl with the different kinds of veggies (the tofu was absolutely delicious especially with the sesame sauce) and i spammed it with french dressing and sesame sauce. :)

Boathouse Sunday Brunch

i love sunday brunch! it's just the awesome relaxing feel of Sunday that makes you want to laze around and combine two great meals in one (: and the sunday brunch at boathouse is definitely a decadent way to kickstart this beautiful day.

i love bread. i love pastries. omg. i love it when restaurants serve it at the beginning of a meal. i always have to resist wolfing down a whole lot of carbo before my meal actually starts, but it's so difficult! i simply love it. as always, i liked the croissants best. there is just something so classy about eating them haha. crisp and yummy (: there were also a bunch of tasty rolls, as well as some bread. i wasn't very impressed with the bread though. compared to the pastries, they were rather average.

boathouse has a brunch special which is priced at $48++ per person. it comes with the bread & pastry basket as mentioned above, as well as a choice of salad or soup (hors d'oeuvres), eggs or pancakes (main course), dessert or cheese trolley, coffee or tea, and fresh juice. it was absolutely delicious and i think it was worth every cent (:
mummy chose the grilled asparagus salad (a la carte price: $25) which had pancetta stresa, cheese smoothie, and was covered with walnut truffle viniagrette. the asparagus was beautifully grilled and had a lovely flavour. the accompanying cheese smoothie was light and airy, and come to think of it, it did feel as if i was 'eating air' haha.

the creameaux of cauliflower (a la carte price: $19) which papa ordered had to be the MOST DELICIOUS SOUP i've ever tasted!!! I absolutely loved it. a thick rich soup with scallops that melted in my mouth and the burst of the flavour of caviar when i bit into the little rounds just made it such a wonderful dish.

the bread and appetizers were already so awesome. it just made us keep wanting more, more, MORE! (: the mains didn't disappoint either (: the apple pancake ($18) was topped with a generous serving of sweet apple compote and raisins, and listen to this, there were FOUR pancakes. which restaurant ever serves four pancakes? :O i was completely blown away. perfect for sharing! ;) it came with maple syrup and...if i'm not wrong, creme fraiche! :D i do hope i'm right. it was a light cream with a tinge of sourness. interesting, although i felt that it didn't really go with the pancake. also, we did wish that the pancakes were a little fluffier, since they were kinda thin. but they were tasty anyway! (:

for the first time, the egg benedict ($18) didn't belong to me! :P hahaha. i'm such a fan of it, that now i've become quite picky about the quality. and i have to say that i felt the egg benedict here was not that great. the poached egg was wonderful, gorgeously poached. however, the bread was a teeny bit tough, not like the crispy brioche or soft muffin that is usually served. this was kind of in the middle, so not that great.

the caramalized banana pancake ($18) was really sweet!!! and i loved it haha. especially with the nutella sauce that came with it! can't go wrong ;)

zhen ordered the slowly cooked sunny side up ($15). the egg was nice and wobbly and i loved the ratte potato that came with it (:

i had the oven baked egg cocotte ($15) which was a really rich bacon leek fondue, with a fluffy egg and truffle emulsion!! it was a deliciously fragrant dish which i loved. but don't try to finish it on your own. i shared quite a bit of it, nearly half, and it was just right xD

for the brunch special, mummy ordered the chocolate (a la carte price: $15) for her dessert. simple as that. it was just different kinds of chocolate. haha. dark and white, with a pile of caramlised bananas and cocoa ice cream.

i pestered papa into ordering the cheese platter (a la carte price: $23). it was quite interesting! three types of cheeses, i couldn't catch the names (but i know there was one goat's cheese which i refused to touch) and it came with crackers by the side. mmmmm delicious! (:

i declare this the best brunch i've ever eaten :D
