it's really about time that i started exploring all the foodie places around upper thomson. there are new outlets sprouting up around this place all the time! :D how eggciting xD yes, i shall convince my friends to visit this area more often hehe. old school delights is this really adorable little cafe that is super, well, old school! haha. there are blackboards all around, old school goodies like those icing biscuits (you know?) and even toy boxes with games like five stones! haha so cute (: and you order your food by writing it on a little whiteboard which they provide at each table! haha fun!!
their food is quite affordable, and really yummy!!! :D or maybe i was just starving then, but i really enjoyed it (: and of course, the good company was the hit :D the hainanese chicken cutlet ($8.90) was wonderfully crispy with a light airy crust encasing juicy chunks of chicken pieces and covered with OSD's homemade zesty sweet & sour sauce. the fried rice that came with it was nice and eggy too (: yummm!
my friends wanted to order the home-style curry chicken ($8.90) which sounded really delicious! unfortunately it was sold out :( i guess that is testimony to its popularity! ;) so instead they ordered the old school heritage mee siam ($5.20). this was another yummy dish (i must say ALL the dishes we had were really fragrant!! :D). the blend of 11 fresh grounded spices lent an awesome flavour to the sauce.
and i definitely have to rave about my nasi lemak besar ($7.20). omgosh. the moment i put a spoon of that rice into my mouth, i was sold. the burst of aroma from the pandan and coconut in my mouth was amazingly awesome! i haven't eaten such fragrant nasi lemak rice in a really long time. and the amount of dishes accompanying it is pretty generous. a chicken wing, slice of omelette, ikan bilis & peanuts and otah. plus a huge dollop of homemade sambal chili that was oh-so-delicious! this is definitely one awesome meal :D whee! and they were really nice, allowing us to make changes to the dish. like ngan, who didn't want otah, managed to change it for ANOTHER CHICKEN WING at the same price! wow. haha actually i don't know which one is worth more, but it's nice that they let her change it (:
dom also ordered the OSD signature pulut ($2.20) which is glutinous rice with a filling of savoury-sweet hae bee hiam (dried shrimps). it came rolled up in a leaf, and when we smelled it, we nearly got blown away! haha. the smell of the hae bee hiam was just totally mind-blowingly awesome.
the combination of sticky rice and crunchy dried shrimps was just delicious :D
after all that food, we were really quite full already. but we had spotted the sticky chewy chocolate fudge cake ($5.50) when we first entered and we absolutely could not resist it!!! i have to say that it looked nicer as a whole cake because we could really see the layer of thick gooey fudge on top of the cake. somehow it seemed to be absent in this slice. but it was nice and chocolately, with spongey cake layered with the sticky chewy chocolate.
and the service staff there was so sweet! cos she was from philippines (seriously, the service by philippinos is so much better than that of singaporeans -.-) and we told her that we went to philippines for ocip last year at bagong silang! and because of that, she treated us to a slice of cake :D awww so nice :D the banana cake ($4.20) was again super duper fragrant. every bite was infused with the flavour of the banana, im pretty sure it was REAL bananas and not just the essence. absolutely delicious!
