Habitat Coffee & Little Pancakes

hi there! (: it's been a long time since i did a post on food along upper thomson road. a foodie like me has got to be happiest when living in a food haven, and i'm glad to be such a lucky one! went exploring the cafes in this area one day, and these two have been around for the longest time except that i took such a long time to get down to trying them out!

with such an adorable name,  Little Pancakes described exactly what its whole concept is about perfectly. do not belittle the size of these pancakes! with a diameter slightly smaller than that of a tennis ball, these pancakes might look puny. but when you have 10 of them to devour, it is sufficiently satisfying ;)

when i looked through the menu, i knew what i wanted to order immediately. though it was a little difficult to choose because i was interested in more than one of them, but let's not be greedy shall we? ;) after finishing my portion, i was full enough that i couldn't afford another portion. haha. out of the three pancakes we ordered, i enjoyed my Going Nutella for You ($8.20) the most! chocolate ice cream with a stack of wafer chips, drizzled with a delicious chocolate nutella sauce and topped with almonds and chocolate chips. absolutely divine!

there was an interesting category of Asian-inspired flavours and we got the Mr Bean Turns Red ($8.50) which came with green tea ice cream and delicious azuki beans. i love azuki beans!! this set came without maple syrup, because the azuki plus ice cream was a formidably sweet combination by itself. though i felt that they didn't pair with the pancakes as well as my nutella combination above. perhaps i'm not used to this Asian-Western pairing.

i was a tad disappointed with the savouries selection because there were only three to choose from! and naturally we ordered the Big Fan of All Day Breakfast ($10.90) because it sounded the best out of the three. i would say thumbs up for the portion because there was quite a generous bit of everything - scrambled eggs, glazed sausages, potato and a side salad. this is for the greedy ones who love both their full breakfasts, plus pancakes!

and having talked so much, i realised i said nothing about the pancakes themselves so far! well, they were decently tasty but honestly nothing to shout about. and that was the general feel that i got from this cafe! it's not somewhere that i'd keep coming back to, but it is great for a novel experience (and they do have quite a range of sweet flavours to choose from which is a plus)!

the next day saw us going to Habitat Coffee and i've been hearing a lot about this place for the longest time! and i'm not sure why i hadn't come here since it opened, when it's so convenient! have to warn you that the parking along this row of eateries is quite a nightmare though, so just be prepared! the menu here is simple, but they do their dishes pretty well ;) The Shrooms ($12) is a twist on the traditional eggs benny - poached eggs atop a bed of sauteed mushrooms! the funghi lends an aromatic perfume to that livens up this dish.

the Waffle Sunrise ($10) came with a choice of poached, scrambled or sunny side up and super crisp waffles! it was nice how the waffles were perfectly crunchy on the outside, yet had quite a fluffy interior!

Mama's Banana Pancakes ($10) were good!! it was interesting how these pancakes were firm, yet fluffy, and look at that generous amount of toppings! it was impossible to resist.

and how could i have missed out this gem of truffle fries ($8) located so near my house! :O a super legit portion with pretty good quality to boot! while not the best, it is definitely one of the more truffle-y ones around. now i know where to get my truffle fries fix when im craving it ;)

Irvin's Live Seafood House

this restaurant is really near my house! :D it took over ivins peranakan food - haha it's so strange that IRVINS took over IVINS? i mean, it's like just a difference of one alphabet. initially we thought it was still ivins, just that it was selling seafood, but then we realised it wasnt. and we were soooo sad that ivins was gone :( i have no idea whether we can find it anywhere else in singapore. aww man, our favourite place for peranakan food is gone </3. but but but!!! IRVINS SEAFOOD totally makes up for the fact that ivins is gone. the food is absolutely mind-blowing :O

when i first saw it on the website, i was really excited already! i think i decided what i wanted to eat even before we stepped into the restaurant haha. and sometimes when you have expectations, you might find that reality doesnt match it. but nope, that's not the case at irvins xD it was a thoroughly satisfying meal :D

mm i was wondering which dish to start with haha, they're all so good!!! this is their signature dish - Irvin's Salted Egg Crab  ($23.90). you know i'm a stickler for dirt, which means that i rarely eat crab (although i love chili crab for the sauce! but mostly i'll eat the sauce alone without the crab if i can help it) cos i dont want to get my hands dirty :P haha yes, abit OCD. but this crab, it was IRRESISTIBLE.  haha i'm too excited already, keep using CAPS. but it was great!! the sweet-salty egg yolk sauce was so rich and scrumptious, and the crab was fresh with the meat tender and springy. i just dug into it and heaped massive amounts of sauce on everything, nevermind the possible cholesterol/heart attack which could befall me. it's just once in awhile! ;)

the crispy butter chicken ($15.80) was another chef's recommended dish. sooooo delicious! another ultra sinful dish, but i think i couldnt care less that day haha. crispy chicken, with a fragrant, mouth-watering sauce that i absolutely couldn't resist.

the dry crispy belachan eggplant ($12.80) had the oomph of the chili and was once-again (yes, really every dish was!) drool-worthy. each slice of eggplant was crisply fried on the outside and soft & squishy inside hehe.

the hot plate tofu with special minced pork ($12.80) came with a super generous amount of sauce (yay likes! :D). sizzling hot and fragrant, it was a wonderfully comfy dish.

i have to come back. :D

Salted Caramel

recently i've been trying out the new eateries that have popped up along upper thomson road and i've been kinda disappointed :( BUT!!!! salted caramel is one of those that didn't (:  how wrong can ice cream get? thankfully, not much.

we ordered the three scoop cup of ice cream ($7) which i felt was pretty affordable huh! :D the lovely artisan ice cream was smooth and creamy, and each flavour stood out distinctly. the earl grey carried a fragrant whiff of the leaf-y tea that was oh-so-soothing. the chocolate stout had a robust flavour of the alcohol, yet wasn't overwhelming. and the horlicks & tim tam ice cream was pure comfort food (: loved the chunks of tim tam in it! :D
the waffles here are also really good i heard! although i didn't try it when i went. but they smelled awesome!

Wafflelicious

so many new places popping up on upper thomson road! (: haha i was so excited to know that wafflelicoius was coming - doesn't it sound delicious? :D but cos of that, i was sort of disappointed when i went there >.< the waffles are so small!

this was my  cinnamon waffle with peaches, pistachios and walnuts (: the pricing is $3.50 for the cinnamon waffle, and three toppings costs $1.80.

here are the range of toppings to chose from! i would suggest getting one of the juicy toppings like the jams or maybe the chocolate sauce cos the waffle on its own is quite dry >.< i guess cos it would be good with the gelato? but we didnt order it. and  i was so sad they didnt have the green tea waffle :((( but the cinnamon one was nice! it was the most fragrant (:

this was yi & zhen's chocolate waffle ($3.80) with chocolate chip toppings haha. one topping costs $0.70!

and papa's coffee waffle ($3.80) with walnuts! the coffee flavour was not bad too! but i guess overall there is nothing much special about this place xP

Crust

yayyyy! i finally tried crust! :D after many attempts of me suddenly being busy when i'm supposed to go there, i've finally finally successfully come here (: and i wanna come back again! and again! haha it must be the timing of the night that makes me start repeating myself, brain no longer working. super exhausted >.<

there are really so many interesting sounding pizzas to try out that i wanna come back! i think they do delivery as well! how awesome. and it's SO nearby at upper thomson road <3 whee!

there are many different kinds of sauces and the most interesting one to me was the hoisin sauce pizzas! sadly, my family who ordered the pizza (cos i was late) didnt order that, and in fact, ordered two pizzas with the same sauce! -.- not that it was very significant i guess, since each of them tasted different (: SUPER YUMMY!!!!!

we ordered three pizzas for the five of us to share. each pizza is cut into 8 slices, so it was about 5 pieces each. the portion was just nice! (: the first pizza we had was the wild mushroom pizza (in the vegetarian category, $21). it was a mix of wild marinated mushroom, asparagus & pine nuts (!!!! :D), topped with parmesan and a drizzle of truffle oil on a bechamel sauce base. ah i was wondering what bechamel sauce was. it's white sauce apparently! the mother of sauces in french cuisine :O oooh la la! sounds sexaye. haha. this was a DELICIOUS pizza that felt so super healthy! gosh i love healthy food that taste yummy (:

okay let me talk about the pizza first. it is a thin-crust pizza with super crisp edges, but unlike skinny pizza whose pizza's are paper thin and will crack at the slightest touch, this one is sturdier - there is slightly more flour (: and it's good for holding up the generous amount of toppings on it!

yupp so like i said, the mushroom pizza was flavourful with the variety of mushrooms and the lovely truffle oil on it helped to synthesize the dish beautifully.

the next pizza we had was the white prosciutto (meat category, $23). this pizza was the ULTIMATE that showed how awesome Crust is. it had a bed of wonderfully crunchy sliced potatoes atop the pizza base, and it was further topped with prosciutto and guess what...gorgonzola. which is blue cheese. and we loved it. O.M.G. that was totally amazing. i'm actually really shocked haha. i mean, i honestly felt that the taste of the cheese was really strong, but it never really bothered me at that point in time and only when i checked did it occur to me that, omg! i actually ate two slices of pizza with blue cheese on it! i was, you could say, appalled, yet proud of myself for swallowing that haha. this was our second bechamel sauce pizza. i guess the saltiness of the prosciutto and the freshness of the rosemary sprigs helped to blend out the taste a little? making it way more palatable than what i would expect blue cheese to be. in fact, it won the 'Best Use of Cheese National Award' in 2006! lol! impressed ;)

last pizza we had was the BBQ chicken (under chicken pizzas, $22). it consisted of marinated chicken breast fillets, mushrooms, spanish onions, spring onions and feta on a bbq base. the chicken was tender and the whole pizza flavourful - a delightful dish as well! (:

La Petite Cuisine

French food tends to be associated with fine dining in Singapore, but i recently discovered a quaint little french restaurant along Upper Thomson where they serve unpretentious french food in a cosy setting. This is a branch of the original restaurant in Serene Centre, and i must say that it is a wonderful place for affordable french cuisine (:

papa ordered the goat cheese warmed with salad ($12) but i didn't try it because i can't stand goat cheese! :p from the comments, it had a pretty strong goat meat/milk taste, so i'm glad i didn't try it.

*digression: oh gosh, i think my brain is shutting down, i can't seem to form sentences properly! :( i'm having writer's block, oh no.

okay, back to the review. my favourite dish was the dory with white wine butter and rice ($12.50). the fish was soft and nicely flakey and the sauce, oh-my--gosh. it was lip-smackingly gooooooood! :D slightly sourish and really really tasty, i absolutely loved it xD

the sirloin steak with french frites and salad ($15) was pretty good too. the taste of beef was slightly strong for my liking, but the meat was tender which was nice. and the horseradish mustard that came with it completely masked the strong taste, and made it absolutely lovely. the fries that came with it were delicious, probably because they were really salty :p i guess once in a while won't kill! (:

the fillet of chicken with cepes and butter rice ($13) was really creamy and cheesy. absolutely rich with flavour, but too overwhelming, in my opinion. by the way, what are cepes??

i resisted trying the confit de canard with french frites ($16.50) because i wanted to reduce my intake of deep fried food! i know, i know, silly me right. but i tried the sauce, and it was YUMMY. and according to the rest, the duck had a lovely crispy skin and soft meat, without being too oily. so if you come to this restaurant, go for it! :D
what was impressive at this restaurant was the service! it's a really tiny restaurant, inside only has three tables, and a couple more outside, and the cooking area is right next to the dining area with an open concept. the friendly chef comes out of the kitchen to greet all the guests and to enquire about their meal. i think it's really sweet (:

Fatboys

i've been wanting to try out fatboys for the longest time! my friends said it was good when they went there (without me!!). but when i finally tried it, i was actually not too impressed xP

first up, we had the mozarella cheese sticks ($9.50) for our appetizer. they were pretty well done, nicely crumbed and fried, but i felt that the cheese could have been smoother and more liquid.

for the drinks, i ordered the chocolate thick malt shake with bailey's ($6.50 + $4.50). we also tried the version without bailey's and i actually preferred that! :P not that it wasn't nice, i think i just wasn't in the mood for alcohol. the chocolate malt shake itself was beautifully thick and rich. my suggestion: don't finish one on your own, if not there will be no space for anything else.

the specialty of fatboys is their burgers, so of course we had to try a few of those! i ordered their signature Fat Basterd ($16) which was a humongous burger with double beef chuck patties, extra thick bacon, cheddar cheese, a fried egg and homemade Fatboy's sauce on a sesame bun. i didn't realise there was a more toned down version - the Wimpy ($12) which is exactly the same as Fat Basterd except that it is a much more manageable half-size version!! T.T the burger was not bad though. papa said that the patty was sorta dry, but i beg to differ. it was tender enough for me. what i didn't like though, was the copious amount of  pepper they used in a lot of their burgers!!! it was rather shocking. it would have been much better if the taste of the burger could be allowed to shine, without being masked by all the pepper.

the thick-cut fries that came with all their burgers were generously portioned which was good. although i still prefer the skinnier type of fries.

the swiss shroom ($12) similarly was full of pepper, but this was nicer because it was balanced out by the flavour of the shitake mushrooms and garlic aioli. more mushrooms would be better!

my favourite burger would be the mahalo ($12) which was a very interesting bacon stuffed pork patty with caramelized onions, grilled pineapple, melted emmenthal cheese on a sesame bun. this one had no hint of pepper at all! xD and the patty was really interesting which i liked.

i was really greedy that day. actually just 3 main courses would have done the job. but i still ordered honey mustard chicken kebab ($12). i really liked the honey mustard flavour that the chicken was marinated in!!! the meat was kind of tough, i think they could have grilled it better, although i liked the crispy portions. but the chicken on its own was goooood. no need for extra sauce, i already liked the flavour! (:

Peach Garden

hmm it's kinda sad that i'm blogging about this restaurant at a time when i didn't have such a pleasant experience here! >.< previously i've always found the dim sum here pretty satisfying, but i'm not sure whether it's because of changes to the management/chef or just a one-off experience when my dining experience here wasn't as nice.
by the way, i've you've read my previous dim sum posts (like mouth restaurant, red star and taste paradise), you've probably realised that i generally seem to eat the same stuff when i go to dim sum restaurants :P oops. yup true. hahaha. just that they are all my favourite foods! ESPECIALLY THE CHAR SIEW SOU. so i can't not order them! i try to order slightly different stuff if possible though! to make it interesting haha.

i wont write much for this since they were pretty decent. clockwise from top left: xiao long bao, siew mai, century egg porridge and har gow. the xiao long bao was a bit disappointing in that many of them were stuck to the paper at the base, such that when i pulled it up with my chopsticks, the skin broke and the soup just spilled out :( so i didn't get to enjoy the soup much. nevertheless, the broth was tasty and it was still quite yummy. i liked the siew mai mainly because i felt the fish roe on top added a nice texture to its overall feel. the porridge was quite yummy too, a generous portion (it was nearly overflowing!) and the porridge had a nice, thick consistency.

i liked the bo lo bao! :D i always find the crust of it so interesting!!! i want to learn how to make it xD someday...! and it had a rather generous filling of soft, saucy, sweet char siew inside that was so yummy (:

on the other hand, i was disappointed by the char siew sou :( how can that be right?! it's my favourite dim sum dish! but it really wasn't as nice as it used to be. i used to think that the char siew sou at peach garden were of pretty good quality! but it has since worsened dramatically. for one, they were small and flat! seriously! they were really almost flat! which meant that they had less filling, which wasn't as soft and saucy as the char siew in the bo lo bao. sigh. disappointing :(

the egg tarts too, were puny. couldn't they have just made them a teensy bit bigger so that they would be more satisfying???

oh wells. and that was the end of my meal. the other thing that wasn't good was the selection of dim sum! i dunno why but there was really quite a pathetic selection! there were only two types of trolleys - one with the fried food, and the other with the steamed food. and that was it!! there wasn't even chee cheong fun. imagine that! tsktsk...

Old School Delights

it's really about time that i started exploring all the foodie places around upper thomson. there are new outlets sprouting up around this place all the time! :D how eggciting xD yes, i shall convince my friends to visit this area more often hehe. old school delights is this really adorable little cafe that is super, well, old school! haha. there are blackboards all around, old school goodies like those icing biscuits (you know?) and even toy boxes with games like five stones! haha so cute (: and you order your food by writing it on a little whiteboard which they provide at each table! haha fun!!

their food is quite affordable, and really yummy!!! :D or maybe i was just starving then, but i really enjoyed it (: and of course, the good company was the hit :D the hainanese chicken cutlet ($8.90) was wonderfully crispy with a light airy crust encasing juicy chunks of chicken pieces and covered with OSD's homemade zesty sweet & sour sauce. the fried rice that came with it was nice and eggy too (: yummm!

my friends wanted to order the home-style curry chicken ($8.90) which sounded really delicious! unfortunately it was sold out :( i guess that is testimony to its popularity! ;) so instead they ordered the old school heritage mee siam ($5.20). this was another yummy dish (i must say ALL the dishes we had were really fragrant!! :D). the blend of 11 fresh grounded spices lent an awesome flavour to the sauce.

and i definitely have to rave about my nasi lemak besar ($7.20). omgosh. the moment i put a spoon of that rice into my mouth, i was sold. the burst of aroma from the pandan and coconut in my mouth was amazingly awesome! i haven't eaten such fragrant nasi lemak rice in a really long time. and the amount of dishes accompanying it is pretty generous. a chicken wing, slice of omelette, ikan bilis & peanuts and otah. plus a huge dollop of homemade sambal chili that was oh-so-delicious! this is definitely one awesome meal :D whee! and they were really nice, allowing us to make changes to the dish. like ngan, who didn't want otah, managed to change it for ANOTHER CHICKEN WING at the same price! wow. haha actually i don't know which one is worth more, but it's nice that they let her change it (:

dom also ordered the OSD signature pulut ($2.20) which is glutinous rice with a filling of savoury-sweet hae bee hiam (dried shrimps). it came rolled up in a leaf, and when we smelled it, we nearly got blown away! haha. the smell of the hae bee hiam was just totally mind-blowingly awesome.

the combination of sticky rice and crunchy dried shrimps was just delicious :D

after all that food, we were really quite full already. but we had spotted the sticky chewy chocolate fudge cake ($5.50) when we first entered and we absolutely could not resist it!!! i have to say that it looked nicer as a whole cake because we could really see the layer of thick gooey fudge on top of the cake. somehow it seemed to be absent in this slice. but it was nice and chocolately, with spongey cake layered with the sticky chewy chocolate.

and the service staff there was so sweet! cos she was from philippines (seriously, the service by philippinos is so much better than that of singaporeans -.-) and we told her that we went to philippines for ocip last year at bagong silang! and because of that, she treated us to a slice of cake :D awww so nice :D the banana cake ($4.20) was again super duper fragrant. every bite was infused with the flavour of the banana, im pretty sure it was REAL bananas and not just the essence. absolutely delicious!

Scoopz

*squeals!!!!* there are so many new ice-cream places popping up all over the place! i'm never going to finish trying them all! xP haha. scoopz just opened along upper thomson road not too long ago! (: i think it's the second outlet, no idea where is the other one though!

i went there because i had a discount coupon! lol :P haha poor student must find a way to save moneyyyy (for shopping xD haha). it's so hard to prioritize isnt it? haha. anyways, back to scoopz! they do handmade ice cream, as well as other stuff like waffles, etc! i only tried the ice cream though ($2.90 for one scoop). the good thing is it's the same price for  the cone and the cup versions! i dunno why there always seems to be price discrimination for the two, so this is definitely something good! (: and for $2.90, the portion is really quite generous! look at the photo! (sorry a bit blur - i was getting too excited cos i had to quickly take the photo before the ice cream started dripping down the cone >.<). and the picture was taken after we had licked off quite a bit of the ice cream, so serving size is not bad right!

clockwise from from bottom left: chocolate, rum, lemon, green tea, and the one in the centre is apple cinnamon! (: one downside of this place is that the flavours available are quite limited. compared with the other ice-cream parlours with such fun flavours to chose from, this one definitely pales in comparison. the most interesting one would probably be the apple cinnamon? which mummy said was lacking in flavour. but the upside is that they do the original flavours well! (: I LOVED THE CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM!!!! <3 i haven't eaten simple chocolate ice cream for the longest time. and it was GOOD. (: creamy and luscious. yummy! and the ice cream cone was really crunchy and thick! value for money? haha.

overall, an affordable and cosy place for ice-cream in the neighbourhood! :D

Little Part 1 Cafe

Little Part 1 cafe is tucked away in a small road just off upper thomson road. it's truly a hidden find recommended by one of my readers! thanks steph! :D this cosy cafe captured my heart right from the appetizers xD

the buffalo wings with wholegrain mustard ($10.90 for 6 wings) is absolutely delectable! :D ultra crispy skin slathered with mustard sauce and crunchy whole mustard seeds. and it comes with slices of cucumber dipped in thai sweet chili sauce - OMG (:

and as we were eating, i also caught a whiff of the traditional outback BBQ buffalo wings. they smelled soooo delicious! i'm coming back for them the next time :D

for the main dish, we ordered the irish beef stew ($21.90), only available on weekends! how exclusive. haha. traditional comfort food, the beef is stewed in Guinness for 6 hours, such that it is meltingly soft and dissolves on your tongue. the rich stew is really tasty! and i loved the salad and mash potato that came with it. actually the stew was supposed to be served with rustic toasted bread (which i would have loved to try!!!!), unfortunately, the person bringing the bread was late -.- so the waitress replaced it with mashed potato. which was buttery and fluffy (nice!), but i would have liked to try the bread :(

we also tried the pomodoro chicken crepe ($16.90) which i loved! it was a soft crepe encasing chicken, tomato, ricotta, mozarella and spinach. mmm the cheese was nice and gooey and lent a great flavour to the crepe. and all the ingredients blended together just nicely (:

papa also ordered one of the trappist beers. i've no idea which one it was :P and i really DON'T LIKE the taste of beer, but i guess this one kind of grew on me. as in, i still didn't really like it, but i didn't hate it either. haha.

there were a row of yummy looking desserts on display, and even though i was really full already, i couldn't say no, could i? :P i had a hard time deciding between the brownie and mud pie, and MUD PIE ($7.50) won. well, i can't say it was a good choice >.< the outside of the mudpie was crisp which was lovely, but....the inside was rather dry. i have to credit the cafe for attempting to achieve a warm oozy chocolate inside - they did achieve it to a small extent, but i would have preferred the inside of the mud pie to be much moister and richer with molten chocolate.
i'll be back to try out more of the dishes here! :D especially those BBQ buffalo wings goshhhhh xD and hopefully the brownies won't disappoint :)

Rochor Beancurd House

i need a disclaimer first! the rochor beancurd house which i tried was NOT located in rochor! haha. it is along upper thomson road and it is not related to rochor original beancurd (near school) which i reviewed previously.

i didnt really try the beancurd, but i guess it can't go wrong? it was smooth, although not the wonderfully silky kind, but still decent.

the butterfly bun was quite dense with flour, which some might not favour, but i actually quite liked it! however, i was disappointed by it because the bun was not crispy!!! :( :(

the portuguese egg tarts were good! the crust was crispy and slightly sweet, and the filling was yummy.

the crystal dumplings came highly recommended by the staff, but i didn't try it :p mummy tried them though, and said they were not bad.
