Chinese New Year is coming! :D time for all the goodies and ang pows (: I've decided to do a few posts (hopefully i have the time :p) on CNY-related stuff! inspired by my flower-shopping spree last saturday!
aren't these flowers just absolutely gorgeous? :D i'm really bad at identifying flowers so i won't try to name these. but i just love the colours! :D and look at the lovely bamboo boat at the bottom right corner of the picture. the bamboo comes in various shapes and designs, look at the adorable one which i bought! i just love the little water babies (the little jelly stuff!) haha.
all these are the plants typically associated with CNY (: we bought the kumquat, which is pronounced gumgut in Cantonese, and its auspicious meaning comes from the similar sounding gum金 (gold) and dai gut大吉 (good fortune), so Cantonese like to decorate their house with it in hopes that it will bring good fortune and wealth (:
the pussy willow is definitely my favourite CNY plant! i just love how the fluffy little blossoms burst forth from their casings when they ripen. the numerous blossoms symbolize growth and the coming of prosperity which is auspicious for the new year (: this year, the pussy willows were dipped in dyes which explains the pretty colours! (: aren't they beautiful?
