Sushi Tei

There are so many japanese food chains in singapore, it's difficult to decide which is best. in fact, i visit different food chains for different purposes, depending on my mood. i love ichiban sushi for its sushi and ichiban don. and i don't really like sakae sushi much :p there is nothing special about it! but sushi tei does :D

Sushi Tei's sashimi salad ($9) drizzled with Sushi Tei's SECRET RECIPE sauce is mind-blowingly awesome!! :D the veggies are fresh and crisp, and the sashimi is just lovely. there are a few types of sauces for you to chose, but why go for the others when the sushi tei sauce is just soooo good? i wish i could decipher the various blend of tastes in that sauce so that i can remake  it (heehee :p) but unfortunately i'm no connoisseur and i'm not blessed with the ability to take a dish apart just like that haha. i'll just have to get my fix from sushi tei then (:

another big draw for me at sushi tei would be their fried garlic rice ($8). i have found no other place which is able to produce garlic rice of such high standards. so far, in my opinion, it is unbeatable. but please please comment and tell me if you know of any awesome place to rival this ok!! (: (: the garlic rice here is so fragrant, you can't help but salivate just smelling the dish. yummm! every moist grain of rice is suffused with the aroma of garlic. the red ginger slices and other ingredients just add to the flavour of the dish.

usually we order a plate of sushi to share when we come here, but it is not the main attraction, unlike the two lovelies above (: nevertheless, i like sushi tei's interesting take on sushi. they have a few interesting ones like the golden roll ($14) we ordered this time. it's sushi containing a nicely fried king prawn, wrapped with mango and topped with fish roe! the sweetness of the mango and savoury prawn go surprisingly well with each other, and this is a lovely dish to behold. the presentation is so pretty! (:

and of course, we can never miss out teriyaki when we're at a japanese restaurant! i just LOVE that sauce! (: we ordered teriyaki salmon ($10). there is also the option of shio salmon, but why would you just want a salted fish, when you can enjoy the sauce-y version?! okay, maybe it's just me. i love and NEED sauce ;) which is why i loved this dish because the amount of sauce was so generous! and the fish was cooked just perfectly, nice and soft :D yum!

Dessert Bowl

Everybody goes to Serangoon Garden for Chomp Chomp. Personally, i visited Chomp Chomp for the first time only about...a year ago. Don't throw stones at me! :p I know, i'm super laggy. Even until now, i don't see the extremely strong appeal of it. But i have to admit that the food is GOOD. Anyway, besides Chomp Chomp, there are other places to explore in Serangoon Gardens! i love the quaintness of that little village. it looks sooo cute (: it's just so rare to find such a cottage-y place in Singapore. lovely (: the ambience there is what makes it special. my friend recommended a dessert place there which is supposed to be superb. for the love of me, i could not remember the name nor the location of that store. i just knew it was in Serangoon Gardens and on the second floor in a row of shops. uhh, not very helpful :p but we took a walk around after dinner at Chomp Chomp, and we came across Dessert Bowl. well, since there weren't many (in fact, there were none) stores on the 2nd floor, we guessed that it MUST be the place my friend recommended. and we weren't disappointed! :D

the desserts on offer are simple, nothing fancy. if anything, i was slightly put out by the range of choices. but i found something nice to order anyways! :D

i ordered the snow pear with white fungus ($4). sounds sooo healthy right? (: it was a light refreshing dessert to end off my foodie forage for the day (: the pear was boiled such that it was slightly soft, yet maintained its crunchiness. the wolfberries are good for eyes! and i have no idea what those nuts are. can someone enlighten me please?

Zhen's dessert was interesting. i would have been more adventurous had i been hungrier, but since i had already Chomp Chomp-ed before that, i hardly had the stomach for anything else. this was red bean milk custard ($3.50). the milk custard was rather rich, but it was not too overwhelming because the red bean balanced it out nicely.

mummy and yi had the durian mousse ($4.50). no comment. i don't like durian haha. but it was supposed to be good.

the ambience of this place is really interesting! firstly, you get beautiful views of the Serangoon Garden village and also, the cafe is decorated with really cute stuff!!! go check it out (:

any other dessert places to recommend? :D :D cakes, ice cream, tong shui, anything! (: sweets for my sweets (:

Epicurious

There are so many brunch places that i've yet to try out! I'm patiently exploring them one by one. after all, there is only one sunday a week for me to visit these places, right? Sadly, saturdays are too much of a rush for all of us, so it is never an option. hey, i can no longer say TGI Friday! ): nowadays, it's more like TGI Sunday? and that is IF my sunday is not occupied by anything. damn, school is crazy isn't it?! my whole week is all messed up. haha okay, i should stop complaining and get on with the food! :D

there are two branches of Epicurious - one at robertson quay and the other at rail mall. apparently the one at robertson quay is much more well-received because they do not take reservations for brunch :/ hmph. actually we were all ready to go there anyway, but i decided to call up the rail mall branch to try my luck. and yes! they took reservations! (: so naturally we headed there instead. BY THE WAY, I DROVE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE I PASSED MY TEST! :D possibly giving my family a good heart exercise in the process :p heehee. but it was fun! i drove on an expressway for the first time. but it takes a lot of getting used to. since i drove manual cars while learning (YIPEE, i have to brag about that xD), the feel is kinda different for auto cars. the good thing is that i no longer have to worry about the embarrassing problem of stalling :p hehe. yup, so i drove all the way to bukit timah (: not bad for my first drive huh ;)

there were many many breakfast items on the menu which i wanted to order!! but i finally decided on the eggs benedict ($12 for 2, $6.50 for 1). since we were sharing, i ordered two. this is only the second time i've eaten eggs benedict, so i can't really make a good comparison, but i felt a twinge of disappointment with this eggs ben, compared to the one i had at Riders' Cafe (btw, they've revamped their menu, so there are no more pancakes ): don't know about their eggs ben though). the eggs ben at epicurious is decent. i mean, look at the oozy hollandaise sauce and pretty-looking poached eggs. but biting into it, there came the disappointment. the english muffin seemed rather hard. crispy is something else altogether! but this was TOUGH. which made it a bit difficult to eat. and the egg. omg ): the yolk was not.runny.at.all! WHY?! i expected the yolk to come oozing out once i cut the egg, but no, it was all firmly held together. hmph.

the Full Monty  is exactly that - the works. for $20, you get 3 eggs (sunny side up/poached), sausage, bacon, grilled tomato, mushrooms, baked beans, potatoes, buttered toast, 1 regular coffee/tea and orange juice. wow. i didn't really try much of it, but it seems pretty good. i liked the buttered toast! simple and nice (: and the orange juice was freshly squeezed! yummm!

the pancakes ($4 for 1, $7 for 3) were yummy! soft and fluffy, they remind me of mcdonald's pancakes (: and that's a compliment! topped with maple syrup, they were a lovely treat (:

the baked eggs with toast soldiers ($6.50 for 1, $12 for 2) was a pretty interesting dish. it's eggs with bacon, mushroom, tomato and cream, covered with cheese and baked till gooey - all in that little cup. cute (: it tasted like creamy spaghetti sauce. dip the toast soldiers in for a nice topping, or eat them on their own. it was pretty nice! (: except that just like creamy spaghetti sauce, you get sick of it after awhile :P

Jollibean Smoothie

i tried the jollibean smoothie for the first time on Saturday! (: i was totally attracted by the matcha flavoured one. Even though i was so full after dinner, i couldn't resist ordering it (:

Brain-numbingly cold, this is a great drink for a hot day. the green tea flavour was wonderful!...if i could taste it. i felt that the flavour was not very consistent throughout the drink. some parts of it were tasty, while other parts were significantly less yummy. and because it was all ice, with bits of air in between (i have no idea why the staff scooped the ice in that way), it was rather difficult to drink. nice drink, but i probably wouldn't spend $2.80 on it again.

the red bean flavoured one was not bad as well. i didn't like it as much as my matcha one, but it was the japanese red bean, which is slightly tastier than the typical red bean flavour.

Look at that DRAGONFRUIT! :O

Pole Dancing!

Many people still view pole dancing as something sleazy, which i totally do not agree with! :(

I just had my first pole dancing class at Bobbi's Pole Studio on friday! :D :D it was SUPER FUN. :D i joined the class purely for the purpose of getting fit :p i need more exercise!! and i love dance of any kind (okay fine, MOST kinds), and i thought it would be pretty interesting to join such a class, so there i was! (:

it was pretty challenging (since my amount of muscles are practically nil - all fats! :p heehee) but hopefully i'll get more toned after this! xD wheee! i'm looking forward to my next lesson! :D

Crystal Jade Shanghai Restaurant

Went to the airport last night! (: my family loves going to the airport haha xD especially with terminal 3! it's so pretty (:

Had dinner at crystal jade. somehow we always gravitate towards it when we go to changi airport. should probably make it a point to try other places as well. i was SO hungry today. i wanted to eat everything.

i ordered the gong bao ji ding ($14) purely for the macademia nuts in it xD oooh heavenly!! i love all kinds of nuts. this dish was very tasty - the sauce was bursting with flavour and the dried chilis lent a nice spicy kick to the dish. and the nuts topped it off perfectly, of course.

the sauteed string beans with minced pork and preserved olive leaf ($12.50) was another favourite dish among us. actually all the dishes tasted wonderful yesterday. but it could have been because i was just starving that's why xD i found this a tad salty, but i couldn't care less. i loved the little bits of minced pork which just livened up the entire dish.

the stewed pork in shanghai style ($15) came with adorable little buns. the shanghai version is different from the normal type of stewed pork we typically eat. the sauce is slightly sweeter which is a rather interesting variation. the meat was tender and oozing with just the right amount of fat to make it tasty (: the bun was a little disappointing, being so small and flat, but it tasted good anyway! i actually preferred it with the gong bao ji ding though! haha!

the xiao long bao  ($5.80) were pretty good too. I have absolutely no idea what is the difference between those at crystal jade and in din tai fung. they both seem equally good to me! but fans of din tai fung will probably scream at me for this :p this time i tried a new way of eating it, after being inspired by my friend. as you know, i am crazy over vinegar, so i decided to drench my xiao long bao in vinegar, instead of dipping it in the sauce! :p hahahaha. let's just say it's only tolerable for silly people like me. Yi was appalled when she tried eating it that way. lol.

it took a long internal struggle before i decided on having the red bean pancake ($6.30) for dessert. no, i wasn't deciding whether or not to eat dessert. after all, i was STARVING. but i couldn't decide whether or not to stay in crystal jade for the red bean pancake or go somewhere else for cakes! :p there was secret recipe, tcc and the coffee club all calling out to me! cakes cakes cakes...! red bean pancake won in the end. i hadn't eaten it for so long, and i missed it far too much. cakes can be eaten anytime, yes? (: soon!! the red bean pancake was nice and crispy with piping hot red bean paste in it. oh so yummy!!! sharing food always makes me want more xD

Roland Restaurant

Roland Restaurant was one of the 4 most famous Chinese restaurants in Singapore, along with Red Star and Lai Wah if i'm not wrong! (: i have no idea which is the last restaurant which completes the quartet though! :P since we were in the east on sunday, we decided to pop by Roland for dinner (: haven't eaten there for quite a long time! but the one thing that stuck in my head since my last visit was that their rice is of super high quality!!! seriously! i had never tasted such nice white rice before! this time when we went to the restaurant, we didn't eat rice (because we ordered hor fun instead), but i'll never forget how the rice was just so fragrant and tasty just on its own. :O

doesn't it look pretty? (: first dish we ordered were the salad prawns! crispy prawns slathered with sweet mayo, on a bed of honeydew and cucumber, and BEST OF ALL, topped with fried/roasted walnuts! this dish was really awesome! (: i loved it dipped in the chili provided as well (:

i don't really know what this dish was called, but it's like mini xiao bai cai, in this really yummy sauce-soup base and topped with huge chunks of grilled garlic. the sauce was superbly tasty, and very nutritious. i was so tempted to drink it all up xD and the grilled garlic on top was nicely crunchy and tasty. forget garlic breath! :P

i was somewhat disappointed with the sweet and sour pork here. considering it is such a common dish, which typically tastes good everywhere, i would have expected more from such a good restaurant. Sadly, i felt this dish was just mediocre. the chunks of pork seemed rather hard, rather than crispy.

the beef hor fun was saucy and fragrant, and this is probably one dish that is difficult to go wrong (: the slices of beef were nice and tender!

i've missed orh nee for the longest time!!!!!! every time my family went for dinner at a restaurant with orh nee, i was somehow not around and wouldn't get to eat it ): this time, i finally managed to eat it yay! (: but...it was a bit disappointing >.< the yam paste itself was nice, but because it was in some sort of corn sauce (which i don't really like!) so it didn't really appeal to me xP

anyways, i enjoyed my meal at this restaurant! and i'll be back, again and again! (:

Pho 99 Vietnamese Delights

After coming back from vietnam, my family has been hunting around for good vietnamese food in singapore (: NOT EASY. in the first place, there aren't many vietnamese restaurants in singapore! and after trying the food in vietnam, it is IMPOSSIBLE to find equally good food here xP before going to vietnam, i never liked vietnamese food. the only time i ever tried it was many years ago, in this place at holland V. i found it bland and rather unappetizing. but ever since going to vietnam this april, my opinion of their food has changed completely! xD I LOVE IT! :D especially their rice noodles. i never knew it could actually taste so good :O

Pho 99 is a vietnamese restaurant owned by a vietnamese! (: so the food was pretty authentic i guess?

Vietnamese Spring Roll (Goi Cuon)! 2 pieces for $4. Traditional vietnamese rice paper with shrimp, rice noodles, lettuce and fresh mint. the vietnamese are really big on rice related foods. and they have a good reason to be! because their rice stuff are just so awesomely tasty xD i wonder why our kway teow and bee hoon taste soooo bland, compared to vietnamese food made of rice. hmph. we should honestly learn from them! im so happy ngan just gave me a HUGE packet of vietnamese rice noodles - i can't wait to cook something with it!!! :D the spring roll was refreshing, with the mint leaves in it, and dipped in the homemade chili sauce, it was just heavenly (:

the most famous vietnamese dish ever - beef noodles (pho bo)!!! $8. pho in different parts of vietnam tastes different! i tried the ones in hanoi and ho chi minh city. and i must say i liked the hanoi one a lot LOT more! (: (: i miss it so much!! the version in this restaurant is....the hanoi-singapore version? haha. i guess it tries to exemplify the hanoi version, but it's just not as tasty xP the AUTHENTIC one in hanoi is boiled with beef and chicken bones (if i'm not wrong) overnight and for many hours. so it's SUPER TASTY! :O the one here is pretty decent, but it's only a shadow of the original version :P it was probably tweaked to suit singaporeans' tastes too i suppose >.<

now, the vietnamese coffee is special. it's REALLY REALLY GOOD. there are different grades of vietnamese coffee, mostly from the brand Trung Nguyen. i have no idea what grade of vietnamese coffee was served in the restaurant but it was superb. i'm really not a coffee-person - i don't like it because i'm super sensitive to caffeine. just a few mouthfuls and i can forget about sleeping already. and i'm someone who loves sleep xD so, i don't drink much coffee, or tea. but i prefer tea to coffee. anyway, at this restaurant, my opinion of coffee was totally altered. it was nearly an epiphany! okay, that would be an exaggeration, but the coffee was really good. there wasn't even any sugar in it  but i LOVED it! i only drank a mouthful, but it was really really good. try it and see! it's different from the kopi we drink here x) and it is served in a really cute way.

if you have any vietnamese food places to recommend, please please comment!!! i'm still looking for the best vietnamese food in singapore :D

Gusttimo Di Roma

Okay, this is kinda embarrassing. I had no idea how to order gelato at Gusttimo :P which is why i ended up with 3 half-cups of ice cream O.O the picture looks a bit weird, doesn't it? haha. until now, i'm still a bit confused about how to order, hmmm. anyway, i went there with Yi and Zhen after our dinner at The Soup Spoon, and we each wanted a cup of ice cream for our own. so we told the staff our orders separately, and they initially wanted to put them in the same cup, which we were totally baffled by! so we told them to separate it. then the two staff started conversing in JAPANESE for a super long time, while we were standing there, totally confused! seriously, i felt that it was quite rude of them! O.O I've worked in a hotel before, and what i learnt was that you are supposed to speak in no language other that ENGLISH in front of customers because they might interpret what you're saying wrongly. these two staff totally had no concern for our understanding! :/ tsk. couldn't they have at least tried to explain something to us in english?! anyway, we ended up with 3 half-cups of gelato. weird.
the flavours we tried were peanut (mine!), hazelnut & chocolate (Zhen's) and pistachio with pecan (Yi's). out of the three, i think the hazelnut & chocolate was the nicest ;) it can never go wrong! i just loveeeee ferrero rocher (: (: my peanut one was quite nice, but it didn't taste like peanut? haha! i didn't try the pistachio with pecan, because it apparently tasted like almond jelly which i absolutely loathe :/

The Soup Spoon

Dinnered at The Soup Spoon last night! I'm always so amazed how a bowl of soup there can be so filling :O

i loved the velvety mushroom stroganoff! :D there is just something about a bowl of hot creamy mushroom soup that warms the cockles of my heart xD The soup was thick and creamy, with chunks of mushrooms inside which made it oh-so-delicious! :D simple and good.

each bowl of soup comes with a nice little bread roll that is nicely toasted and soft on the inside. yum! When i first dipped my bread into the beef goulash, i didn't like it. but i realised that was probably because of the capsicum haha! the next few mouthfuls of soup were wonderfully tomato-y, and once i got rid of all the capsicum, it was nice (: the beef was really soft and tender! and the soup was full of ingredients (: overall, a nice and satisfying meal!

Din Tai Fung

The various outlets at Din Tai Fung have been known to have inconsistent quality of food across the various locations. Apparently those in town are supposed to serve a better standard of food compared to those in the heartlands? But since i've never tried the outlets in town, and have only eaten at the Din Tai Fung in Junction 8, i've found it pretty satisfactory! (:

i loveeeeee xiao long bao! (: din tai fung may not have the best xiao long bao around (please comment and tell me where you think the BEST is! (: ) but it's nice enough (: I'm always fascinated by the intricate folds of this tiny dumpling. and i love how the soup inside just bursts into my mouth when i bite into it. slathered in vinegar, this little dumpling packs a punch xD

the steamed chicken soup noodle is a dish we always order when we go to din tai fung. It's simple heartwarming food for the soul (: the soup is amazingly tasty despite its apparently plain looks. and the chicken is nice and tender.

this time, we decided to try the dan dan mian. What i do not understand, is WHY dan dan mian served everywhere seems to be a different version??! i wonder what the original one is supposed to be like? The one at Din Tai Fung is pretty interesting. The peanut sauce made it taste somewhat like satay sauce? which was pretty nice. but then again, i like almost everything that has peanut in it (with the exception of peanut paste :/ )

now for the STAR of the meal! (: i saw the gorgeous longevity buns ($7.80 for 7) on display outside the restaurant and i just had to have it! don't they look adorable?! *squeals* (: (: nice soft bun with just the right amount of chewiness, and a generous amount of dou sha inside. sooo yummy! (:

What really impressed me at Din Tai Fung though, had nothing to do with the food. I felt that the service was pretty outstanding! (: at least in the Singapore context haha. The staff were really polite and greeted us every time they came to our table, whether to top up our tea or to serve us food. they were really prompt in refilling our tea too! (: and one of the waitresses was really cute. when she saw Yi picking out all the spring onions from her dish, the waitress told her that she could tell them not to put in the spring onion next time! lol! ;) anyway, yupps! good service! :D

Gurney Drive

Gurney Drive is a famous food haven in Penang. But the one i'm referring to in this post is not the original Gurney Drive :P haha, unfortunately i don't have the luxury of time to go to Penang now! it's back to school time! (: anyway, this cafe is one that sells Penang food in a hawker-like setting (with aircon! :P) in the heartlands of Ang Mo Kio x)

Went there for lunch with mummy! They have a pretty affordable lunch set at $7.90++ or $8.90++ which includes a side dish, main course and coffee/tea (you can change to another drink and top-up the balance).

i tried the Gurney nasi lemak, and i was surprised to find out that it was pretty different from the nasi lemak that i normally find in Singapore! I guess here is just the penang version to add on to the malay and chinese nasi lemak, which are also pretty different (: the most significant part of the nasi lemak is probably the curry chicken, but i was disappointed by it. The chicken lacked gravy and was rather dry. yikes! ): the rice was fragrant though, and the ikan bilis and omelette couldn't possibly go wrong. the chili was really spicy! which gave a nice kick to the dish, but nearly impossible to withstand. i liked how the sour achar added to the taste of the dish.

This was my first time trying penang lor bak. hmmm isn't lor bak simply stewed pork?? I'm kinda confused. anyway, the closest food i would relate this to would be ngoh hiang? it's pork wrapped in beancurd skin and comes with tofu (yay!!). The lor bak and tofu are a good contrast to one another, the former being rather salty, while the tofu restores your palate (: and i liked the sauce that came with it (:

Since i've never tried penang food before, i don't really know how close this place comes to it. but it seems pretty popular, so it should be good! :D

The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks

Another beautifully sad story by Nicholas Sparks.

I haven't had the time to read a book in ages. At least, since school has started. But I can't resist Nicholas Sparks' books. They're touching, emotional, poignant, everything along those lines - what i completely would not expect from a guy (i'm not trying to be stereotypical here :P). And i absolutely love his books (: (:

The Last Song is about a summer. A summer for a girl away from home, where she reconnects with her father and falls in love. Love, happiness, along with pain, betrayal and loss. I cried so much while reading this book. But at the end, I smiled the biggest smile ever. (: An absolutely beautiful book, full of emotions, exactly what i love (:
Any books to recommend to me? (: (: Please comment and suggest! Thanks!

Tony Roma’s

Dinner at Tony Roma's was sadly a crazily rushed event because i had to zoom off for a meeting after that. But i enjoyed my dinner there in any case. (:

i love bread. You all know that, don't you? (: for a teaser to our big meal ahead, we were served two pieces of french loaf. Initially, i looked at them and wondered, "hmmm, how are we going to split that among the 5 of us?" Well, silly me. i realised that they had already cut it for us :P The crust was crispy and the bread was nice and fluffy. absolutely gorgeous x) and i loved the garlic spread that came with it!

The last time i came to Tony Roma's, i saw that the other diners had ordered the onion loaf, and i was dying to try it when we visited the restaurant this time!!! We ordered the half loaf ($8.90), which the waitress told us was "very small". And i highly doubt her judgement now, because, well, just look at the photo! does that look small to you?! It was just meant to be an appetizer! We enjoyed it greatly - giant hand cut onions, breaded and deep-fried. Sinful xD actually these are EXACTLY like the 'onion rings' which i so detested at Handburger, but since they weren't meant to be onion rings, i was fine with these. I guess it's a matter of perception :P but what i loved about this dish was not so much the onions, but the SAUCE! oooh, now THAT was the main attraction for me! i slathered every ring of onion with the bbq-mayo sauce, which was just perfect! (:

for the main course, we ordered the chicken & steak combo ($31.90). you have a choice of two sides, and we chose ranch-style beans and french fries. first off, i have to say...I LOVED THE SIDES more than the chicken & steak! :P The ranch-style beans must have been the nicest beans i've ever eaten! :P I'm not really one who likes baked beans, and i pretty much detest the beans served at mexican restaurants. but this was different somehow! i just adored the sauce. yummm! :D the french fries were very tasty too! i don't mean that the chicken & steak were bad though! the steak was medium done, pretty good, but a bit too chewy for me (gave my jaws quite a bit of exercise). i felt the chicken could have been tastier, as it was only the skin with the barbecue sauce that made it tasty. the meat itself seemed rather bland :/

now tell me, who does not order ribs when they go to Tony Roma's? THAT IS NOT ALLOWED!! Tony Roma's ribs are famous! they're a must-try! although i suppose the standard is sometimes inconsistent...hmmm...

We ordered the regular slab St Louis-style ribs ($27.90). They're supposed to a larger, meatier cut of pork ribs with more natural marbling (umm whatever that means? I'm not a connoisseur :P anyone care to enlighten me? please comment!). There are a few choice of sauces to chose from and we tried the Bourbon BBQ (first picture) and Tony Roma's Red Hots (second picture)! :D  I was actually kinda disappointed with the Bourbon BBQ ribs ): I felt that there was not enough sauce, and hence it was not as tasty as i expected? The Red Hots ribs were another story though! now, don't be afraid of the name. i was rather apprehensive as well, imagining fire burning down my throat, but nah, it was not really spicy actually. but the sauce, compared to the BBQ ribs, was zesty and yummy, and i loved it! :D

I'll always go back to tony roma's (: Hopefully i'll have the time to enjoy my food slowly the next time (: This time i was so tempted to kill the waitress because she took forever to bring the bill and i was in such a rush xP
